Investigation of the Social Services Office discovers: 52.8% of Iran's Youth Want to Die
July 15th
Panah Farhad Bahman: "Sometimes as a result of all the social ills, I want to die sooner". 52.8% percent of young people surveyed by the Social Services office either marked 'agree' or 'strongly agree' in response to the above comment. This office has been researching feelings about society, politics and the economy amongst the youth. Anomie refers to a state of alienation from society. Dr. Seyed Hadi Marjai, member of the Board of Research and Planning of the Education ministry believes:"the youth's confusion over finding role models, lack of equality in society, lack of faith in fairness in society or that anyone receives their due, lack of hope or faith in the future, widepsread bribery and cronyism in society, lack of merit or any attention to merit in distributing rewards, lack of faith in the regime's ability in solving problems, a sense of poverty and increasing backwardness of the society and country, lack of faith in the possibility of a better life on the one hand and their many wishes for a better life and the vast distance between them and the realisation of their dreams is the cause of this anomie, alienation and despair towards society, government and politics in addition to hopelessness."
This research which was coducted in the year '80, and appears in the most recent issue of the Journal for the Study of the Young ('83), is presented from the National Young People's Organsiation, and claims that 68.6% agree that:"the more time passes the worst society gets". 77.4% don't know what is going to happen to them tomorrow given the current insecure social conditions. This survey which was conducted amongst 500 young people in Tehran, with an average age of 21, showed that 67.4% see the society as if there was no justice or any laws governing society. Another 62 percent do not believe the government and the current political framework can respond to the people's problems.
This survey reveals a dark, but realistic picture of the youth. Numerous other surveys conducted annually also show the same results. These results go as far back as the year '73 when an official survey showed that 67.8% of the people suffered from anomie, and did not trust anyone. None of the officials we contacted could tell us how or why, by hiding the results of these surveys or stamping them with "Top Secret", they were going to help solve any of these problems. |
