Protest against Marriott Hotels By S.O.S. Iran

Iran of Tomorrow Movement

Marriott International, Inc.

Bethesda, MD 20817

January 28, 2005

It has recently come to our attention that the Director of the Interests Section of the
Islamic Republic of Iran in Washington D.C., Mr. Ali Jazini, has reserved a large
section of the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center for a celebration
of the “Twenty Sixth Anniversary of the glorious victory of the Islamic
Revolution in Iran.”
While you may not be aware of the political and economic ramifications of this event,
it is certainly in the best interest of Marriott International, Inc. and in the interest of
the United States of America to deny Mr. Jazini the opportunity to hold this
celebration at your Conference Center or at any other Marriott property. For your
information, February 6th has been formally declared as “Death to America Day” in
the Islamic Republic Calendar.
The date chosen to hold this celebration, February 6th, is closely associated with the
Iran Hostage Crisis, in which Islamic fundamentalists, acting under the orders of the
Iranian Government, stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and took 52 American
Diplomats hostage, holding them for 444 days. This celebration is a blatant insult to
those Americans who suffered for 444 days during the Hostage Crisis and to the 241
Americans who died at the hands of the Islamic Republic in the 1983 bombing of an
American barrack in Lebanon. By associating Marriott with a government which
President Bush has repeatedly declared to be a “state sponsor of international
terrorism”, you are not only putting a black mark on the Bethesda North Marriott
Hotel, but also on Marriott International across America. Due to the great revulsion
that the majority of expatriate Iranians and patriotic Americans feel towards the
Islamic Republic, a boycott of the Marriott properties by these two groups will likely
ensue and a great deal of unpleasant publicity will undoubtedly result.
Furthermore, under President Clinton (Executive Order 12959), the Islamic Republic
has been declared “an extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign
policy and economy of the US”. Trade with the Islamic Republic or facilitation of
its activities within the borders of the United States is illegal under U.S. law. Allowing
this “celebration” to take place at the Marriott could very well violate these legal
parameters set in place to protect national security, and result in a number of
serious legal and financial ramifications for Marriott International.
Page 2
Since its inception, a primary goal of the Islamic Republic has been to destroy what it
terms “the Great Satan”, a crude reference to the United States. To this end, they
have used every means at their disposal including hostage taking, targeted
assassinations, bombings, and other blatant acts of terrorism. They are currently in
the process of developing nuclear weapons which, if completed, could pose a major
threat to American personnel and interests in the Persian Gulf region and beyond.
Given that providing a terrorist breeding ground in the United States is illegal,
facilitating a celebration on Marriott property for the purpose of rejoicing in their
terrorist victory borders on treason and certainly is a betrayal of those American
lives taken by Islamic Republic terrorist activities. Iranian Americans will not tolerate
the act of celebrating the Islamic victory against America, and we are prepared to
take any action necessary to stop this event and to facilitate and support Homeland
Security involvement in this matter.
Although you may have been previously unaware of the true consequences of
allowing this pageant of anti-Americanism to take place, you are now being given
clear notice of the true intent of the February 6th event organized by a terrorist
state sponsor, the Islamic Republic of Iran, at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel
and Conference Center.
We thank you for your time and hope that this issue is taken seriously by the Board
of Directors of Marriott Properties and its senior management staff, and that the
problem is properly addressed before any damage occurs to Marriott International’s
reputation.
Respectfully,
Dr. Iman Foroutan

This sounds like a great opportunity for those of us in the DC area to bust out the old signs and markers and have ourselves a good old fashioned protest.

This just has to be held on the day of the Superbowl, doesn't it? Oh well, protesting this sounds like more fun anyway.

Bethesda, Md. (AP) - A Bethesda hotel has canceled a
dinner purportedly celebrating the anniversary of the
Islamic revolution in Iran.

Marriott International cited federal law that forbids
U.S. companies from working with the Iranian
government as the reason.

The event at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and
Conference Center was organized by the Iranian
government's diplomatic mission in Washington. It was
booked several months ago, but Marriott officials
canceled it recently after learning of the Iranian
government's role from a group that had planned to
protest the event.

The United States severed diplomatic relations with
Iran in 1980.

Islamist Celebration Canceled
Md. Facility Booked for Revolution's Anniversary

By Tim Craig
Washington Post Staff Writer

A celebration scheduled for this weekend at Montgomery
County's new hotel and conference center, marking the 26th
anniversary of the Islamic revolution in Iran, was canceled
after the hotel's operator learned that it would violate
federal law.

The Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center,
which opened in December, was to play host to 1,000 guests at
a reception thrown by Ali Jazini, director of the Interests
Section of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

John Wolf, a Marriott spokesman, said yesterday that the
hotel canceled the event after realizing it is illegal to do
business with Iran. He said Marriott officials will "be
taking steps" to prevent similar bookings in the future.

Announcement of the event raised an outcry from Iranian
opponents of the country's regime who live in the United
States. They organized a campaign calling on Marriott to
cancel.

"For them to come celebrate the anniversary of their glorious
revolution in the United States is just wrong," said Iman
Foroutan, director of the Iran of Tomorrow Movement, an
American-based organization working to oust Iran's
fundamentalist regime. "If they allowed this, I would not be
surprised if al Qaeda celebrated their next anniversary in
the heart of New York."

In a letter sent this week to Marriott officials and Homeland
Security Secretary Tom Ridge, Foroutan cited an order from
then-President Bill Clinton designating Iran as "an
extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy
and economy" of the United States. The letter went on to say
that it is illegal for Iran to do business within the borders
of the United States.

Foroutan, whose Los Angeles-based group operates a satellite television station, said Iranian dissidents were planning to
picket outside the conference center.

Feb. 11 is an Iranian holiday marking the fall of the
government of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in 1979. In November
of that year, militants stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran,
taking hostages and triggering a 444-day crisis for President
Jimmy Carter, during which he severed diplomatic ties with
Iran. The ordeal ended when President Ronald Reagan took
office in January 1981.

In his State of the Union address Wednesday, President Bush
said Iran "remains the world's primary state sponsor of
terror -- pursuing nuclear weapons while depriving its people
of the freedom they seek and deserve."

Iran maintains a presence in the United States by operating
an office from the Pakistani Embassy. Calls to the Iranian
Interest Section were not returned yesterday.

The $80 million Marriott conference center is a signature
initiative of Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan
(D), designed as a place where civic organizations and
businesses can meet.

Although $40 million in state and county money was used to
construct it, Marriott books all the events, said David
Weaver, a Duncan spokesman.

"We are not in the booking business," Weaver said.

Death to America celebration evicted

My favorite hotel chain, Marriott, has done the right thing, canceling the booking of an Iranian group celebrating the revolution and "Death to America Day." Dr. Zin, of Regime Change Iran reports:

The Marriott corporation has just announce that it had canceled an event to celebrate the Islamic victory against America.

The event, billing itself as: "Twenty Sixth Anniversary of the glorious victory of the Islamic Revolution and Death to America Day", was scheduled for tomorrow.

I reported last Tuesday, the Iranian government had booked the use of the Bethesda Marritott. The opposition to the event was lead by Dr. Iman Foroutan, executive director of SOSiran.com and ActivistChat.com.

Our combined efforts apparently generated a firestorm of letters, phone calls and faxes to the Marriott corporate office.

As a result, the Washington Post is now reporting that the Marriott canceled the event saying:John Wolf, a Marriott spokesman, said yesterday that the hotel canceled the event after realizing it is illegal to do business with Iran. He said Marriott officials will "be taking steps" to prevent similar bookings in the future.

Announcement of the event raised an outcry from Iranian opponents of the country's regime who live in the United States. They organized a campaign calling on Marriott to cancel.

"For them to come celebrate the anniversary of their glorious revolution in the United States is just wrong," said Iman Foroutan, director of the Iran of Tomorrow Movement, an American-based organization working to oust Iran's fundamentalist regime. "If they allowed this, I would not be surprised if al Qaeda celebrated their next anniversary in the heart of New York."

In a letter sent this week to Marriott officials and Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge, Foroutan cited an order from then-President Bill Clinton designating Iran as "an extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy and economy" of the United States. The letter went on to say that it is illegal for Iran to do business within the borders of the United States.

Hugh Hewitt's point that corporations cannot ignore the blogosphere appears to be once again vindicated.

Nice work, Dr. Zin.

Iranian Embassy cancels celebrations of Islamic Revolution:

[World News]: Washington, Feb 4 : The Iranian Embassy here has cancelled the celebration marking the 26th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Iran following strong protests by anti-regime Iranian.

The Embassy has cancelled the booking at Montgomery County's new hotel and conference centre, where the function was scheduled to be held, after strong protests by anti-regime Iranians headed by Imam Faroutan, Director of the Iran of Tomorrow Movement, The Washington Post reported yesterday.

The movement is an "American-backed organisation working to oust Iran's fundamentalist regime," the report said.

"If they allowed this, I would not be surprised if al Qaeda celebrated their next anniversary in the heart of New York," Imam Faroutan said. Foroutan's Los Angeles-based group operates satellite television station.

The Embassy had invited 1,000 guests for the reception, the report said. PTI

Of course the EU, especially France would do anything to please the ragheads....as long as the oil is flowing in, and money is gauranteed in their pocket...sort of like what Sadam used to do.......you can include Canada with this bunch..
