BRUSSELS, Belgium - A group of unarmed Iranians staged a protest aboard a Lufthansa jet at the Brussels airport Thursday, refusing to leave the plane and calling for the return of the monarchy in Iran, officials said.

The plane landed at Brussels International airport at 3 p.m. (9 a.m. EST) on a flight from Frankfurt, and the protesters stayed behind after most of the 59 passengers got off.

"This is not a hijacking," said police spokeswoman Astrid Kaisen.

"They are sitting on the plane and they don't want to come off," Kaisen said, adding police could not yet confirm the nationalities of the protesters.

She said police negotiators were talking with them.

"No force has been necessary and no extra security measures were taken," she said.

Christina Zia, who said her father called her on his cell phone from the plane, said they were supporters of the late shah and wanted to draw attention to Iran's problems.

"There are no weapons. This is nothing dangerous. They only want the world to see the problems, to see that Iran is not what the world sees today," said Zia, who spoke to The Associated Press by telephone from Germany.

The group had a letter for NATO and refused to leave the plane until they are allowed to hand it over to the alliance, Zia said, adding that she did not know its contents.

She did not know how many people were with her father on the jetliner.

oke, this is the belgian version of the story (rough translation of the underlined sections):

1.these people (who dont want to leave the plane) are from diffrent arab countries

2. the reason for their action is not yet known!!!

.....oh they also report that because of this action the return of this flight has been canceld

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A group of passengers of Iranian origin refused to disembark from a plane at Brussels airport on Thursday in a protest against the government in Tehran.

Reuters Photo

The 59 unarmed passengers were talking to the authorities, police spokeswoman Els Cleemput said, after other passengers and crew left the Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt and the pilot disabled the plane.

"We want the European Union (news - web sites) to remove the Islamic leaders from Iran (news - web sites). We want to remove the mullahs from power," Armin Atshgar, a protester on the flight, told Reuters by mobile phone from the aircraft.

Atshgar, who said he held a Belgian passport, added that he and his fellow protesters would not leave the aircraft until they had spoken to a member of the European parliament. He added that there were children and pregnant women on the aircraft but said there were no weapons and the mood was calm and safe.

A spokesman for the Belgian Foreign Ministry said the ministry had sent a "high official" to the airport to talk to the protesters.

"We are talking to these people. They are non-violent and it's not a hijacking. It's apparently a group that wants to restore the monarchy in Iran," the spokesman said.

Belgium's RTL television said the group had handed a statement to police protesting about European Union relations with the Islamic Republic.

The EU is negotiating to try to persuade Tehran to curtail sensitive nuclear work which could help it produce a bomb, in return for trade and security benefits.

"They have all got European passports but they are probably all of Iranian origin," Cleemput said. "They have definitely got political motives."

A Lufthansa spokesman said the plane, a Boeing 737, had landed in Brussels's Zaventem airport at 2 p.m. on schedule with 103 passengers and crew.

Police said the protesters had refused food.

Air traffic continued as normal at Brussels National Airport and another plane was allowed to dock in the next bay, indicating the authorities saw no threat from the protesters.

Dear Cyrus,

This should be on the front page.

I SUPPORT THE PROTESTERS. MORE POWER TO THEM.

A Boeing plane of German Lufthansa is parked alongside Pier A at Brussels National airport in Zaventem, occupied by some 60 Iranians. Some 60 people of Iranian origin refused to leave the plane on arrival in Brussels, to protest against the European Union's conciliatory policies towards Iran.

A relative of an Iranian protesting aboard a Lufthansa aircraft parked on the tarmac at Brussels' Zaventem airport March 10, 2005, talks with a security guard. A group of passengers refused to leave the plane after it landed in Brussels earlier today.

Unidentified officials waiting outside, as a group of unarmed Iranian passengers refused to get off the Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt saying they wanted the return of the Iranian monarchy at Brussels airport, Thursday Feb.17, 2005.

I stand by the protestors and Anjomane Padeshahi Iran in this noble effort on their part in the path towards the overthrow of the filthy Islamic Regime.

*****************************************************

UPDATE:

A member of Anjomane Padeshahi Iran, (Kaveh a former Imperial Iranian Officer), who is onboard the Lufthansa plane in Bruxelles had an interview with KRSI (Radio Sedaye Iran) a few minutes ago and has re-iterated the demands of our fellow compatriots and has urged Iranians who are able to come to the Bruxelles Airport tomorrow in show of solidarity with this movement. Also Iranians who can attend protests outside the embassies of Belgium and those of the Islamic Republic should get organized as soon as possible and execute their plans wherever in the world they are.

NOTE: Belgian police have informed the brave Iranian women and men that they will not be providing them with any food or water.

P.S. If you are listening to KRSI they have announced the address/tel of the consulate of Belgium in Los Angeles for those of you who live there. There is need of placards. If you are able to and want to do something for the sake of Iran please go there and unite with your compatriots. Contact KRSI for further information: http://www.krsi.net/us-en/

Bravo and Afarin to the brave and courageous Iranians who took this peaceful civil disobediance action in order to shed light on the greedy sponsorship of the brutal and despotic Islamic Republic of Iran by the immoral EU!

Thank-you.

Please suppor them!

UPDATE:

A caller from Germany who is in contact with our compatriots on the Lufthansa plane in Bruxelles had these new developments to say:

- The Belgian police has turned off all water supplies to the aircraft leaving the people inside without any water.
- Everyone is feeling well and are determined to stay as long as it takes
- Belgian police is threatening to take the plane to another location and force the passengers to get off there
- For those of us who can: OUR PRESENCE IS NEEDED in that Bruxelles Airport, we need to be there and support our compatriots
- A group of compatriots from "Auchen" (sp) Germany are going by bus to Bruxelles tomorrow morning
- German television reportage on this development was very poor in the beginning and wasn't mentioned until the 10 P.M. news but are now (forced to) slowly picking it up

Liberator jaan,

If you are playing directly from the player, exit Media Player, then run it again. If this fails, reboot.

Also, try watching it in the web:

I'm watching it now, and have no problems at all. BTW, I'm assuming that you have broadband.

PM me if it doesn't work.

Iranian Monarchists Protest on Jetliner

Thursday, March 10, 2005

BRUSSELS, Belgium — A spokesman for a group of unarmed Iranian protesters holed up on a Lufthansa (search) jetliner at Brussels airport said Thursday they are on a hunger strike and are prepared to die for their cause to see the overthrow of the Iranian government.

"We won't be moved from here unless we die and they take our bodies from the airplane," said the man who gave only his first name, Ira, in a telephone interview with The Associated Press from the plane.

He said the group of protesters numbered 79, including four children and 22 women, and wanted the United States, the European Union and Russia to sign a statement to stop cooperating with the Iranian government.

Police said there were only 59 passengers refusing to the leave the plane, out of the total 103 that took the flight from Frankfurt, Germany.

The standoff began shortly after the flight landed at 3 p.m. (1400GMT).

Police spokeswoman Els Cleemput said negotiators were on the plane to try to find a solution and said the protest was not a hijacking.

She said no force had yet been used to try to remove the group.

Ira, who said he was originally from Iran and was 60 years old, said the protesters had launched a hunger strike.

There are "children, women and men, some of them sick, hungry because we reject to eat or drink," he said.

"We are not terrorists, we are messengers of peace," Ira said, adding that his group, which he called Anjoman-E Padeshahi Iran, wanted the overthrow of Iran's government and were supporters of Iran's former monarchist Shah government.

"We want the European countries, also the United States and Russia to stop helping the Iranian regime," he said. "We reject any support of the EU, Russia, U.S. or any other foreign country to this Islamic regime of mullahs."

He said the current government in Iran "came to power by European leaders, especially by [then U.S. President] Jimmy Carter's support in 1979."

"We want from these leaders to stop supporting terrorist regimes any longer ... to get rid of this Islamic regime or any kind of radical brutal religious movement from Iran," he said.

Ira said his group had "premeditated" the protest action, adding the group had "video evidence" with them "showing how Iranians were being tortured."

Ira, who said he was an American national and a psychiatrist from New York City, said there were eight American nationals on board, three Swedes and "many English nationals."

"We are just sitting here we are not going to move out unless embassy officials from the United States, English and others come to sign our statement and guarantee us that if we go out of here they don't arrest us," he told the AP.

"We are all educated, we are all professional people working and we are not terrorists; in contrary, we are against the terrorists," Ira said.

Two police vans were parked alongside the plane at the airport terminal. Airport spokesman Paul De Backer said the protest was not disrupting other flights.

European Union and NATO officials said the organizations were not involved in negotiations to end the standoff.
