Sir,

The fate of Zahra Kazemi as revealed to the Canadian press yesterday by Dr. Shahram Azam is a challenge to our country and a challenge to us all. The Islamic Republic of Iran, and the Mullah clerics that control it, have demonstrated nothing but contempt for justice in this matter. Moreover, it is easy to discern the horrendous treatment Ms. Kazemi was subjected to and the blatant disregard for basic human rights that is being covered up is by no means exceptional when considering the modus operandi of the personnel assigned the task of enforcing the Republic's oppressive agenda.

Ms. Kazemi was subjected to the same brutal treatment that is ugly fate prescribed on a regular basis to those who challenge the regime. That's why it happened at all. It happens all the time. We as Canadians aquiesce to these circumstances every time allow our elected representives and their agents to engage the regime in any sort of diplomatic venture offering compromise and every time we silently allow corporations that operate under the Canadian flag to profit from its undertakings.

Mr. Pettigrew, I understand full well that in the larger scope the impact of economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran would have little impact on the flow of goods to and from that sovereign state. The void left by Canada no longer participating in commercial ventures will be quickly filled by commercial operations flying a different flag. That much is obvious but that's not the point.

I contend that seeking to impact the Islamic Republic financially is an exercise in looking at the wrong side of the equation. I contend that by continuing to allow ourselves to profit from dealing with the Islamic Republic and the Mullah that controls it we do ourselves the most grave of disservice. I contend we should take our small potatoes, as it were, at start banging the biggest damn gong we can find, calling attention to the grievous conditions that Ms. Kazemi risked her life trying to expose and eventually led to her torture, rape and killing. We as Canadians must take a firm stand and call attention to the corrupt sham of a regime that saw to it that the voice of Ms. Zahra Kazemi was silenced. We must take up her cause because it is a justcause and make every effort to ensure her voice is once again being heard and make it resonate in every forum at our disposal.

Its not a question of economic impact. It is a question of what price we are willing to pay for the causes of justice and basic human rights. I call on you as our elected representive in matters of foreign relations to let it be known the Government of Canada has heard the cry for justice, that we will not allow it to be silenced and that we will no longer tolerate the disregard for human rights that defines existance within the borders of the Islamic Republic of Iran. I call on you and our government to once again publically and fervently condemn the attrocity of Ms. Kazemi death, to aggressively reassess current policy, to announce that the Government of Canada is unilaterally taking steps to enforce a moratorium on new dealings with Iran and engaging the business community to assess the domestic impact of full economic sanctions against them with a mind to cut economic ties with the regime completely.

If refusing to get in the sandbox any longer is our only means acting on our Responsibility to Protect then so be it.

Let the Mullah know that we don't want their blood money.

Respectfully,
...

By ROB GILLIES, Associated Press Writer

TORONTO - A Canadian photojournalist was beaten, tortured and raped before she died two years ago while in custody in Iran, a former Iranian army doctor who examined her said Thursday.

Shahram Azam said he examined Zahra Kazemi, a 54-year-old Canadian freelance journalist of Iranian origin, in a military hospital in Tehran on June 26, 2003, and noticed horrific injuries to her entire body that could only have been caused by torture and rape. It was just days after she was arrested for taking photographs outside a Tehran prison during student-led protests against the ruling theocracy.

Dr. Azam recently received political asylum in Canada.

Azam examined Kazemi in the emergency room after she was transferred from Tehran's Evin prison. Reading from notes taken from the examination, Azam said Kazemi arrived unconscious with bruises all over her body.

She had a skull fracture, two broken fingers, missing fingernails, a crushed big toe and a smashed nose. She also had deep scratches on the neck and evidence of flogging on the legs and back.

"As a doctor I could see this was caused by torture," Azam said through an interpreter.

He said as a male doctor in a military hospital, he was banned from examining a woman's genitals, but the nurse who did so told him of "brutal damage."

Prison officials sent her to the hospital saying she was suffering digestive problems and had vomited blood. Azam concluded that the blood had poured down her throat from her smashed nose.

Iranian officials have said she died after she went on a hunger strike, fainted and struck her head as she fell.

The authorities have at various times acknowledged that Kazemi was killed by state security officers, but the official explanation is unchanged.

A secret agent was brought to trial and was acquitted. But lawyers for Kazemi's mother said the proceedings were flawed. They also said it was a prison official, not the agent, who delivered the fatal blow.

Iran-Canada relations, soured by the slaying and subsequent burial in Iran against the wishes of Kazemi's son in Canada, further deteriorated after Iran refused to allow Canadian observers to attend the trial. Relations were strained further when the Canadian ambassador was not allowed to attend the last session of the open trial.

Canada withdrew its ambassador in July in protest. A new ambassador has since been sent to Tehran.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew condemned Iran on Thursday for not holding a legitimate trial.

"The Iranian justice system has failed in every instance so far. Iran is failing basic human rights and to Canada this situation must stop," Pettigrew said. "This new evidence, while gruesome, simply reinforces our position that this was not an accident. The family needs answers, Canadians want answers and we will not stop pursuing this case until justice is rendered."

Azam, a former major in the Iranian security force, arrived in Canada on Monday. He fled Iran last fall with his wife and daughter under the guise of seeking medical treatment.

Officials from Canada's Foreign Affairs and Immigration departments interviewed him in Sweden in November and fast-tracked his request for refugee status.

Marlys Edwardh, the family's attorney, said Azam's recollections match the description given by the woman's mother, who was allowed to briefly view the body in the hospital.

She said his account also makes it clear the Iranian government has lied about the case from the start.

Kazemi's son, Stephan Hachemi said he would not rest until he finds justice for what happened.

"I'm continuing what my mother has started by standing up to the Iranian regime," he said.

Edwardh said they have asked Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin to press the Iranian government for a full criminal investigation of the case.

Canadian Justice Minister Irwin Cotler said Iran's standing in the international community is now on trial.

"The Kazemi case is a case study of whether Iran is finally going to come clean, become accountable and show that is a citizen of the international community," Cotler said. "If they don't respond properly, and accountably in this instance than they will expose themselves for all the world to see as an outlaw nation."

Petition Start Date By ActivistChat:
Thursday July 24, 2003

To: Prime Minister Of Canada , U.S. President, EU Heads of States
The Right Honorable Jean Chretien:

CC: U.S. President, EU Heads of States, Heads of the world’s democratic states, General Secretary of the United Nations, The United Nation Commission for Humman Rights Special Rapporteur, U.S. Secretay of State, U.S. Congress, Senator Brownback, the European Parliament, Canada Foreign Minister, Amnesty International, International Journalism Group and Ms. Kazemi‘s Son, Mr. Stephan Hachemi

As you are aware, Ms. Zahra Kazemi, a Canadian-Iranian photojournalist, was arrested on June 23, 2003 and was savagely and barbarically beaten to death by Islamic regime officials. News agencies reported that Ms. Kazemi's body was buried on July 23, 2003, in Shiraz, Iran, contrary to the wishes of her family, and repeated formal requests from the Canadian government. "Don't send me your condolences when your government killed my mother, tortured her and still doesn't respond to my demands" - words that spoken by her son (for other detailed facts regarding the case please click on http://www.activistchat.com/reporter/index.html ).

The systematic use of torture and terror, as instruments of domestic and foreign policy employed by the Islamic Clerical regime in Tehran, is no doubt a crime against humanity. It is time for a collective and decisive action by the Canadian, G8 governments, and the international community to support the freedom-loving Iranian People, to put an end to such horrific crimes against humanity and to pave the way for freedom.

Today the Iranian people are demanding civil and political freedoms, separation of religion and government, equality and justice (especially
for the Iranian women), the immediate liberation of all political prisoners and Free Referendum.

With regard to the above, we the undersigned request your urgent help so that another human tragedy can be prevented before the Islamic regime causes another massacre in Iran. It is a regime that has executed over 120,000 political prisoners and freedom-loving Iranians in less than 2 decades. An Iran that is free from the current regime's rule will have countless benefits such as undercutting much of the funding for terrorist groups, paving the way for a more peaceful Middle East, and creating a region in which all inhabitants can participate in a system that is for the people and by the people. In this we ask that you respond to the following appeal:

- The continued legitimization of the Islamic regime in Iran must stop at once.
- Please give an ultimatum to the regime, urging it to step down peacefully because they have lost all legitimacy.
- Please ask the UN to immediately send a team to observe the situation in Iran.
- Please support the general demand of the Iranian people for a free referendum and elections observed by international organizations.

If the Islamic Clerical regime in Tehran does not step down peacefully please consider the following steps:
- Freeze All Assets Of The Regime.
- Discontinue Oil Exports From Iran.
- Expel The Islamic Clerical Regime From the UN.
- Expel The Islamic Regime's Ambassador From Canada and EU countries. Relations with the regime should be reduced to Consular level only, as to serve the consular needs of the Iranian people.

Since the tragedy on September 11th, one of the most tragic human rights violations of recent times, the world community must deliver a strong condemnation to such violators. To avoid another such tragedy we should not tolerate any human rights violations in any part of this planet by any group. Please consider the above requests from peace-loving and freedom-loving people of Planet Earth.

"Human beings are all members of one body.
They are created from the same essence.
When one member is in pain,
The others cannot rest.
If you do not care about the pain of others,
You do not deserve to be called a human being."

A Quote from Famous Persian Poet Saadi Shirazi
( 13th century Persian poet, from Shiraz the birthplace of Ms. Zahra Kazemi)

And this is your government at war," he told the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) earlier this month. There was "a massive amount of criminal wrongdoing that was covered up at the highest command out there, and higher," he added.US President George Bush claimed that the prison abuse scandal of US soldiers sexually humiliating and torturing Iraqi detainees was just "conduct by a few American troops". Dear BitWhys:
Thank you for your great letter to the Canadian government. Remember the ragheads (mullahs), have invested a lot of money in Canada. I have heard it is under different companies and businesses. If Canadian government wants to do anything, the best thing is to freeze their assets. I heard Rafsanjani and gang has stock in just about everything in Canada. For one reason it is easier and safer in Canada than anywhere else. Therefore, discovering these companies and finding out whether the share holder is "related" to some governmental official, is essential. These ragheads are the Houdini of deception & cunning. Most likely their investments are under different names. The challenge is whether Canadian government wants to stop being in bed with the reagheads, and start investigating and freezing these properties, companies etc. Or, like the rest of the Europeans they want to keep appeasing the ragheads at any cost.

Canadian Tortured, Raped Before Death in Iran

March 31, 2005
The Associated Press
Dow Jones Newswires

http://www.iranvajahan.net/cgi-bin/news.pl...5&m=04&d=01&a=2

A former Iranian army doctor said Thursday a Canadian photojournalist was beaten, tortured and raped before she died while in custody in Iran two years ago.

Shahram Azam said he examined Zahra Kazemi, a 54-year-old Canadian freelance journalist of Iranian origin, in a hospital June 26, 2003 and noticed horrific injuries to her entire body that could only have been caused by torture and rape. It was just days after she was arrested for taking photographs outside a Tehran prison during student-led protests against the ruling theocracy.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew responded by blasting Iran for not holding what he said was a legitimate trial.

The authorities have at various times acknowledged that Kazemi was murdered by state security officers, but the official explanation is unchanged.

A secret agent was brought to trial and was acquitted. But lawyers for Kazemi's mother said the proceedings were flawed. They also said it was a prison official, not the agent, who delivered the fatal blow.

Iran-Canada relations, soured by the slaying and subsequent burial in Iran against the wishes of Kazemi's son in Canada, further deteriorated after Iran rejected the idea of Canadian observers attending the trial. Relations were strained even more when the Canadian ambassador wasn't allowed to attend the last session of the open trial.

Canada withdrew its ambassador in July to protest the handling of Kazemi's death. A new ambassador has since been sent to Tehran.

Azam, a former major in the Iranian security force, arrived in Canada on Monday. He fled Iran last fall with his wife and daughter under the guise of seeking medical treatment.

Officials from Canada's Foreign Affairs and Immigration departments interviewed him in Sweden in November and fast-tracked his claim for refugee status.

Marlys Edwardh, lawyer for the family, said Azam's recollections match the description given by the woman's mother, who was allowed to briefly view the body in the hospital.

She said his account also makes it clear the Iranian government has lied about the case from the start.

Kazemi's son, Stephan Hachemi said he wouldn't rest until he finds justice for what happened.

"I'm continuing what my mother has started by standing up to the Iranian regime," he said.

Edwardh said they have asked Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin to go back to the Iranian government and press for a full criminal investigation of the case.

This is yet another shameful mark on the Canadian Government and its appeasement of terrorists!

Iranian Official Visited Canada After Kazemi Row

April 01, 2005
The CBS

CBC Radio has learned that while publicly denouncing the killing of Zahra Kazemi in July 2003, Canadian officials quietly allowed an Iranian government official to visit Canada. E-mails obtained under the Access to Information Act show that Customs officials were concerned about the visit becoming public. One e-mail said: "We should keep this as low-key as possible."

Iran had requested that one of their officials, Seyed Abu Talib Najafi, be briefed on the workings of Canada's new Advance Passenger Information database, designed to identify potential threats to civil aircraft before they board.

Two e-mails within Canada Customs suggested there were concerns: "What's our position about the requesting country?"..."in view of the current situation with Iran."

This was because the Department of Foreign Affairs had, eight days ago, recalled Canada's ambassador in Iran because it had refused Canadian inquiries about the Zahra Kazemi case. Kazemi, a Montreal-based photojournalist was beaten to death after being arrested after photographing a Tehran prison riot. Iran maintains her death was accidental.

Foreign Affairs told Customs officials it's only concern was "whether he (Najafi) will be able to get his visa in time."

In dozens of e-mails, there is no mention of Zahra Kazemi, and no one questions why Canada would help a Iran, considered by some to be a brutal police state. As well, no one asked why a government with a known track record of sponsoring terrorist attacks might want such information.

With just days to go before the visit, a flurry of e-mails revealed last-minute concerns about Najafi's identity. Canada believed his first name was Nasser. Only after he landed in Canada did they learn it was Seyed Abu Talib Najafi.

Chrystiane Roy, Iran desk officer at Foreign Affairs, informed Customs that if Najafi already had a visa, "it would be too late to do any screening." That e-mail was sent after Najafi was already en route to Canada.

In the end, it was only the great North American blackout of August 14, 2003, that prevented the briefing session.

Instead, Rachelle May, now acting director general of the Canada Border Services Agency took him across the street for a coffee. In a report sent afterwards to Foreign Affairs, she writes "he showed interest in Advanced Passenger Information."

She adds. "He was pleased that I took the time to meet him."

I'll keep that in mind. Timing is everything. The House of Commons sits again starting next week. Its obvious the Toronto press is not going to let this rest. The CBC is pursuing it as well. At this point I'm just going to wait to see what our well meaning (and charmingly inept) elected officials have to say for themselves. That should give me time to figure out who to contact next.

Feds Silent on Torture

April 01, 2005
Toronto Sun

http://www.iranvajahan.net/cgi-bin/news.pl...5&m=04&d=01&a=3

Federal government officials had first-hand evidence five months ago that Montreal photojournalist Zahra Kazemi had been tortured in Iran but remained mum on the critical development in the case, lawyers for her family confirmed yesterday. Kazemi, 54, was an Iranian-born dual citizen arrested after taking pictures outside a Tehran prison in June 2003. She died several days later and her case has made international headlines ever since.

Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew told reporters yesterday his officials met with Iranian Dr. Shahram Azam in November, but didn't say why the feds didn't go public with the information.

His spokesman, Sebastien Theberge, said it's not up to the Canadian government to release the information about new developments in the case.

Calling the account of Kazemi's injuries "gruesome," Pettigrew said Azam's evidence backs the government's original assessment that the woman was murdered.

Ongoing efforts by the feds to push the Iranian government for an international criminal trial have fallen on deaf ears, he said.

Azam, who was fast-tracked through the Canadian refugee system and arrived here Monday, outlined the horrific injuries he saw on Kazemi when she was brought to the emergency room at a Tehran army hospital days before she died.

Azam said Kazemi suffered numerous injuries, including a broken nose, skull fracture, multiple bruises and several broken fingers. There was also evidence of rape and flogging.

Asked why he chose to go public with the evidence, Azam said it was his duty as a doctor to come forward.

"I could see this was torture," said Dr. Azam through an interpreter.

Lawyer John Terry, who is representing Kazemi's son Stephan, said the pair first interviewed Azam in Sweden last November to verify his story and the Canadian government interviewed him a week later.

Step up pressure on Iran torturers
Toronto Star

http://www.iranpressnews.com/english/sourc...rce/004160.html

Zahra Kazemi did not die in "an accident" at Tehran's notorious Evin prison, whatever Iran's discredited courts may claim. She was savagely beaten, tortured and raped, according to a physician who treated her as she lay dying from a brain injury.

Kazemi, an Iranian-born Canadian photojournalist, was arrested June 23, 2003, outside Evin prison while taking pictures at a pro-democracy rally. Three days later she was carried unconscious on a stretcher into Baghiatollah military hospital, reports Maj. Shahram Azam, a physician in the Iranian security forces who treated her. She never recovered.

What Dr. Azam saw at the hospital that night shocked him and will outrage Canadians, including the 250,000 of Iranian origin in this country.

Kazemi's skull was badly bruised and her nose was crushed. Her eardrum was ruptured. Fingers were broken. Fingernails and toenails were ripped out. Her ribs were bruised, possibly broken. She had been flogged. A nurse reported Kazemi had been violently raped. "I could see this was torture," Azam said yesterday in Ottawa, after arriving this week with his family seeking asylum. And he said the torture went on for some time.

Azam's horrific account of Kazemi's last hours makes a mockery of the Iranian court's claim that her death resulted from "a drop in blood pressure resulting from a hunger strike" and a fall to the ground.

While Canadians have just learned of Azam's findings, Prime Minister Paul Martin's government has known for months. Why wasn't the information made public? And why did Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew suggest lamely yesterday that "Canadians want answers"?

What Canadians want is action.

That action should start today with Martin recalling our ambassador to Iran and demanding Tehran immediately reopen the probe into Kazemi's death, with full Canadian and international participation. He should push for a statement by the United Nations endorsing that approach.

Martin should also insist Iran surrender Kazemi's remains to her family for burial here. That would allow the family to seek an autopsy to verify Azam's account. If Tehran balks, Martin should expel Iran's ambassador, bar officials from visiting here, and downgrade ties with the regime.

He should then petition the International Criminal Court to hold Ayatollah Ali Khameini and Iran's rulers to account. Article 8 of the Rome Statute that created the court gives it jurisdiction over crimes "committed as part of a plan or policy" that violate the Geneva Conventions, including "wilful killing" and "torture or inhumane treatment." Kazemi was subjected to both under a policy to crush dissidence. We have a case.

Martin has already rightly labelled Iran an "emerging threat" because of its attempts to develop technology that can be used to make nuclear weapons, and because of its support for terror. He should push other countries to adopt the same view. Finally, Canada must sponsor more embarrassing U.N. resolutions censuring Iran for rights abuses.

Martin must be relentless in this. That's because until justice is delivered for Zahra Kazemi, the whole world must know that Iran is run by a brutal regime that lies and turns a blind eye to torture and murder.

Kazemi's slaying stirs calls for action on Iran Fri. 1 Apr 2005
The Globe and Mail
By MICHAEL DEN TANDT AND MARINA JIMÉNEZ

http://www.iranfocus.com/modules/news/arti...hp?storyid=1773

The Conservative and New Democratic parties joined forces yesterday to demand Ottawa dramatically ratchet up diplomatic pressure on Iran after revelations that Canadian photojournalist Zahra Kazemi was brutally raped and tortured while in Iranian custody in 2003.

"We want the government to do what they should have done almost two years ago, which is to drop the failed approach of soft-peddling and soft diplomacy, and make tough demands," Tory foreign affairs critic Stockwell Day said.

Both Mr. Day and his NDP counterpart, Alexa McDonough, said Canada should withdraw its ambassador to Iran if Ottawa doesn't immediately get satisfaction from Tehran on key issues, such as the return of Ms. Kazemi's remains to her family in Canada and a new criminal investigation subject to international monitors.

At a press conference in Toronto yesterday, Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew brushed aside the calls for a new approach, saying Canada is already doing all it can to seek justice for Ms. Kazemi.

Mr. Pettigrew said the new testimony in the Kazemi case, which comes from the emergency-room physician who examined her before she died, "certainly demonstrates gruesome details that make it extremely troubling, most disturbing. But it does not change the nature of the dossier."

Economic sanctions by one country alone don't work, Mr. Pettigrew said. And he dismissed the notion of recalling Canada's ambassador. "We need an ambassador there to promote our case," he said.

Mr. Pettigrew added that Canada has known from the outset that Ms. Kazemi was murdered. "We do not accept the Iranian government's allegations that this was an accident. We never have."

However, Prime Minister Paul Martin, to whom Ms. Kazemi's family made a personal appeal yesterday for action, signalled a somewhat tougher position.

"I read the story this morning the same way we all did, and it's virtually impossible to not have your heart torn by what happened to her, and what her family and son must feel reading that," Mr. Martin told reporters while on a visit to Whistler, B.C.

"I must say that, by any standard, this is simply unacceptable. Canada, through its Minister of Foreign Affairs, is obviously voicing that view, and we are looking at what steps to take," he said.

Mr. Martin said that Ms. Kazemi's son, Stephan Hachemi, had asked for a meeting with his officials and that he immediately agreed.

In Ottawa yesterday, Dr. Shahram Azam — a former physician with the Iranian security police who last month received asylum in Canada — spoke in great detail about the gruesome injuries to which Ms. Kazemi eventually succumbed in July of 2003.

She had a badly broken nose, a smashed eardrum, broken fingers, a crushed toe, missing fingernails and toenails, a severe head injury, signs of flogging, and deep bruising all over her body, he said.

An examination by an emergency-room nurse revealed "brutal" damage to Ms. Kazemi's genital area, which the nurse said could only have been the result of violent rape. "Those injuries, extensive and severe as they were, could only have been sustained during torture, Dr. Azam said. "It was the first time I saw someone who was tortured," he said in Farsi, speaking softly but confidently. "It was shocking for me."

Dr. Azam's testimony is the first account by a medical witness that categorically contradicts the official Iranian explanation for Ms. Kazemi's death, which is that she died after fainting and hitting her head.

Dr. Azam said he'd examined Ms. Kazemi early on the morning of June 27, four days after she'd been arrested while taking photographs of a student protest outside Tehran's Evin prison.

Lawyers for Mr. Hachemi called on the federal government to use Dr. Azam's evidence to initiate a more aggressive approach to seeking justice for Ms. Kazemi from Iran's fundamentalist Islamic government.

"What we have now is evidence that the Department of Foreign Affairs and other international agencies should be holding Iran accountable."

Lawyer Marlys Edwardh said that the family's appeal to Mr. Martin was made in a letter yesterday. The letter proposes new avenues through which the government might bring pressure to bear on the Iranian regime, Ms. Edwardh said.

She said Ottawa could take legal steps that would make it easier for Mr. Hachemi to sue the government of Iran for compensation. She also suggested that the government could press Iran to enter into international mediation on the issue.

Both Mr. Day and Ms. McDonough castigated the government for its apparent inaction on the Kazemi file since the Department of Foreign Affairs first learned of the new medical testimony last November. "If they knew then that [Ms. Kazemi] was tortured, why did they resume normal relations?" Mr. Day asked.

Canada withdrew its ambassador to Tehran last July in protest over the Kazemi affair, but appointed a new ambassador to the post in late November.

Mr. Pettigrew acknowledged that Canada's ambassador to Iran has not yet discussed Dr. Azam's evidence with the Iranian government. "The diplomatic relations are not yet at that level," he said.

Respectfully,
...

Martin says Iran must be held to account for Kazemi's torture and death

Source URL: http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/cpress/20050402/ca_pr_on_na/kazemi_martin_4

2 hours, 10 minutes ago

STEVE MERTL

KAMLOOPS, B.C. (CP) - Iran must be held to account by the international community based on the strength of a doctor's account of the injuries he found on Canadian journalist Zahra Kazemi, Prime Minister Paul Martin said Friday.

"I think there's no doubt whether you are talking about international courts or whether you are talking about the UN Commission on Human Rights," he said, "I would certainly think the details of what happened to her now in the testimony that has been brought has got to make the world aware of just what Iran is all about and that they have got to be held to account."

Kazemi, 54, an Iranian-born dual citizen, was arrested after taking pictures outside a prison in Tehran in June 2003.

Iranian officials first claimed she died accidentally as the result of a fall while weakened by a hunger strike. Later they charged a low-level secret police officer in her death but he was acquitted in a closed-door trial.

But on Thursday refugee doctor Shahram Azam, formerly with the Iranian military, spoke with clinical coolness at a news conference as he listed the bruises, broken bones and other injuries he found on Kazemi. These could only have been the result of the deliberate torture and rape, he said.

Speaking through an interpreter, Azam recounted in a matter-of-fact way how Kazemi was brought into his Tehran hospital unconscious and on a stretcher on June 27, 2003, four days after her arrest.

Azam, a former major in the Iranian security force, arrived in Canada on Monday. He fled Iran last summer with his wife and daughter under the guise of seeking medical treatment.

On Friday, Martin defended Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew's handling of the Kazemi case.

And he backed the Foreign Affairs Department's decision to keep the allegations under wraps until after Azam had come to Canada. Foreign Affairs was apparently aware of the allegations last November when he applied to come to Canada after fleeing Iran for Sweden.

"I think that's what's very important is to have the testimony of the doctor," Martin said at the end of a two-day trip to B.C. "That was more striking and obviously brought the matter home in the way that a simple statement wouldn't."

Martin said he hoped the new information would have an impact on Canada's attempts to enlist international support in pressuring Iran to answer for Kazemi's death.

Pettigrew said Thursday the doctor's "gruesome" account of her injuries only reinforces Canada's belief she was murdered but that didn't change the "dossier."

Pettigrew's response drew opposition criticism from both the NDP and Conservatives, who demanded Canada recall its recently appointed ambassador to Iran and impose economic sanctions.

Pettigrew rejected demands to recall Canada's ambassador or impose sanctions unilaterally.
