Iran's Final Solution Plan

November 01, 2005
American Daily
Daniel Pipes

“Iran’s stance has always been clear on this ugly phenomenon [i.e., Israel]. We have repeatedly said that this cancerous tumor of a state should be removed from the region.”

No, those are not the words of Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, speaking last week. Rather, that was Ali Khamene’i, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s supreme leader, in December 2000.

In other words, Ahmadinejad’s call for the destruction of Israel was nothing new but conforms to a well-established pattern of regime rhetoric and ambition. “Death to Israel!” has been a rallying cry for the past quarter-century. Ahmadinejad quoted Ayatollah Khomeini, its founder, in his call on Oct. 26 for genocidal war against Jews: “The regime occupying Jerusalem must be eliminated from the pages of history,” said Khomeini decades ago. Ahmadinejad lauded this hideous goal as “very wise.”

In December 2001, Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, a former Iranian president and still powerful political figure, laid the groundwork for an exchange of nuclear weapons with Israel: “If a day comes when the world of Islam is duly equipped with the arms Israel has in possession, the strategy of colonialism would face a stalemate because application of an atomic bomb would not leave anything in Israel but the same thing would just produce minor damages in the Muslim world.”

In like spirit, a Shahab-3 ballistic missile (capable of reaching Israel) paraded in Tehran last month bore the slogan “Israel Should Be Wiped Off the Map.”

The threats by Khamene’i and Rafsanjani prompted yawns but Ahmadinejad’s statement roused an uproar.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan expressed “dismay,” the U.N. Security Council unanimously condemned it, and the European Union condemned it “in the strongest terms.” Canadian prime minister Paul Martin deemed it “beyond the pale,” British prime minister Tony Blair expressed “revulsion,” and French foreign minister Philippe Douste-Blazy announced that “For France, the right for Israel to exist should not be contested.” Le Monde called the speech a “cause for serious alarm,” Die Welt dubbed it “verbal terrorism,” and a London Sun headline proclaimed Ahmadinejad the “most evil man in the world.”

The governments of Turkey, Russia, and China, among others, expressly condemned the statement. Maryam Rajavi of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, a leading opposition group, demanded that the European Union rid the region of the “hydra of terrorism and fundamentalism” in Tehran. Even the Palestinian Authority’s Saeb Erekat spoke against Ahmadinejad: “Palestinians recognize the right of the state of Israel to exist and I reject his comments.” The Cairene daily Al-Ahram dismissed his statement as “fanatical” and spelling disaster for Arabs.

Iranians were surprised and suspicious; why, some asked, did the mere reiteration of long-standing policy prompt an avalanche of outraged foreign reactions?

In a constructive spirit, I offer them four reasons. Ahmadinejad’s virulent character gives the threats against Israel added credibility. Second, he in subsequent days defiantly repeated and elaborated on his threats. Third, he added an aggressive coda to the usual formulation, warning Muslims who recognize Israel that they “will burn in the fire of the Islamic umma [nation].”

This directly targets the Palestinians and several Arab states, but especially neighboring Pakistan. Just a month before Ahmadinejad spoke, the Pakistani president, Pervez Musharraf, stated that “Israel rightly desires security.” He envisioned Muslim countries like Pakistan opening of embassies in Israel as a “signal for peace.” Ahmadinejad perhaps indicated an intent to confront Pakistan over relations with Israel.

Finally, Israelis estimate that the Iranians could, within six months, have the means to build an atomic bomb. Ahmadinejad implicitly confirmed this rapid timetable when he warned that after just “a short period … the process of the elimination of the Zionist regime will be smooth and simple.” The imminence of a nuclear-armed Iran transforms “Death to Israel” from an empty slogan into the potential premise for a nuclear assault on the Jewish state, perhaps relying on Rafsanjani’s genocidal thinking.

Ironically, Ahmadinejad’s candor has had positive effects, reminding the world of his regime’s unremitting bellicosity, its rank antisemitism, and its dangerous arsenal. As Tony Blair noted, Ahmadinejad’s threats raise the question, “When are you going to do something about this?” And Blair later warned Tehran with some menace against its becoming a “threat to our world security.” His alarm needs to translate into action, and urgently so.

We are on notice; will we act in time?

Italian political leaders to demonstrate outside Iran embassy Mon. 31 Oct 2005

ROME, Oct 31 (AFP) - Italian political leaders from both left and right will take part in a rally outside Tehran's embassy in Rome on Thursday to protest against calls by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for Israel to be "wiped off the map."

Foreign Minister Gianfranco Fini of the right-wing National Alliance party said Monday he will join leaders of the two biggest opposition parties, Piero Fassino and Francesco Rutelli, as well as Rome's left-wing mayor Walter Veltroni, for the torchlight rally.

Veltroni described Ahmadinejad's comments as "an intolerable insult not only to the Jewish state but to all the international community."

The appeal was launched at the weekend by the right wing daily Il Foglio, whose editor Giuliano Ferrara is a former spokesman for Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

Berlusconi described Ahmadinejad's comments as "completely crazy and unacceptable," in a television interview to be screened Monday.

"This behaviour leads nowhere. We have reached the absurd and I hope that wisdom returns to the minds which gave voice to such sentiments," he said in extracts of the interview released at the weekend.

Amos Luzzatto, president of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, said he and members of his organisation would attend Thursday's rally.

Thank you Italy and Italians, the only country in Europe that has supported Iranian people.

U.S. freezes Iran state TV’s account in New York Sat. 29 Oct 2005

Iran Focus

Washington, Oct. 29 – Authorities in the United States froze on Saturday the bank account of the office of Iran’s state broadcasting corporation in New York on terrorism charges.

The account of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB)’s New York office was suspended after authorities determined that the organisation was an official organ of the Iranian government.

In a written order to Chase Bank in New York, authorities said that Iran was a state sponsor of terrorism and seeking weapons of mass destruction, and they demanded that its assets be completely and indefinitely frozen.

In the past, IRIB correspondents in a number of countries have been detained on suspicion of spying for Tehran while working under the pretext of news production. Iraq recently arrested IRIB’s chief correspondent in Baghdad on espionage charges.

IF EUROPEAN COUNTRIES AND CANADA WOULD HAVE FOLLOWED WHAT US DOES/DID, IRAN'S CRIMINAL REGIME WOULD HAVE NOT LASTED FOR SO LONG.

Bon Voyage Liberty....

"There is always a temptation, in the middle of a long struggle, to seek the quiet life, to escape the duties and problems in the world, and to hope the enemy grows weary of fanaticism and tired of murder. That would be a pleasant world -- but it's not the world we live in. The enemy is never tired, never sated, never content with yesterday's brutality. This enemy considers every retreat of the civilized world as an invitation to greater violence."

Iran gives $1 million to Palestinian terror

Distribution ceremony sponsored by PA President Abbas

http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=47189

By Aaron Klein

JERUSALEM – Iran last month distributed $1 million to families of Palestinian suicide bombers and jailed terrorists at a ceremony sponsored in part by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, WND has learned.

A speech given on behalf of Abbas at the distribution ceremony called for the liberation of "all" Palestinian lands and a stop to the "Judaization" of Jerusalem, reported the Information and Terrorism Center at Israel's Center for Special Studies.

The Al-Ansar Association, a division of the Iranian Martyrs Foundation, based in Tehran, held the ceremony in the Gaza Strip on Oct. 13 to distribute the funds to families of suicide bombers, jailed terrorists and Palestinians whose homes were demolished during Israeli anti-terror operations – usually because a family member committed a terror act or terrorists were allowed to use their homes as shelter.

Al-Ansar was founded in 2003 to serve as the Palestinian branch of the Iranian Martyrs Foundation, which, according to the Center for Special Studies, grants money on behalf of Iran. Al-Ansar also operates under the auspices of the Martyr Institution run by Iran-backed Hezbollah operatives in Lebanon.

Al-Ansar's Palestinian office is headed by an Islamic Jihad member who is directed by Hezbollah, said the Center for Special Studies.

Abbas sent a representative to deliver a speech on his behalf at the $1 million distribution ceremony, which was videotaped and attended by several members of the Palestinian Legislative Council. Abbas was also a sponsor of the ceremony, the Center for Special Studies reports.

Giving a speech for Abbas, Minister of Prisoners' Affairs Hisham Abd issued a call to fight against Israel's West Bank security fence and the Judaization of Jerusalem, and he said the PA formulated "national plans" to liberate Palestinian lands.

Dr. Reuven Erlich, director of the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, told WND Abbas' sponsorship of the ceremony demonstrates the PA president "prefers not to confront the terror organizations."

The public ceremony is the latest evidence Iran directly backs Palestinian terrorism.

Said Erlich: "Iran considers the generous support it provides to 'charity associations' in the Palestinian Authority-administered territories a means to support the terrorist organizations, mainly the Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Hamas, and an instrument for acquiring influence among the Palestinian population."

Senior Israeli security sources told WND last week's suicide bombing north of Tel Aviv that killed five civilians was directed from Syria and funded in part by Iran. They said the Islamic Jihad cell responsible for the bombing was directed by Iranian-funded Hezbollah.

Sources said Hezbollah forces using Iranian money have created a terror apparatus of Palestinian militants in the West Bank consisting mostly of Jihad members who receive full-time salaries from the Lebanese group.

Palestinian security previously had intercepted a series of communications, including phone calls and e-mails, between Hezbollah and West Bank terrorists indicating Hezbollah had been trying to recruit suicide bombers to carry out attacks, sources say.

One official said intercepted bank transactions previously suggested Hezbollah had raised its Iranian-sponsored cash offers to Palestinian terrorists and now is willing to pay $100,000 for a suicide bombing operation. In the past, information indicated Hezbollah would pay $20,000 for such attacks.

Maj. Gen. Yaacov Amidror, former head of Israel's military intelligence, told WND, "The money comes straight from Iran. At one point, we had information Iran once told Islamic Jihad if they didn't carry out a suicide attack within 60 days, they would cut back their funding. That just illustrates the kind of relationship Tehran has with them. Also with Hezbollah."

Said a senior security official, "Both Syria and Iran are under mounting international pressure. They need a distraction and they need a conflict somewhere else. They know suicide bombings force Israel to respond."

Iran has been under fire for its growing nuclear ambitions. Countries from around the world blasted remarks last week by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad calling for Israel to be "wiped off the face of the earth."

http://www.un.org/ ("off the cuff" remarks by the Sec. General)

New York, 3 November 2005 - Secretary-General's press encounter following Security Council consultations on Ethiopia and Eritrea

(excerpt)

Q: Mr. Secretary-General, our good friend Congressman Tom Lantos has urged you to reconsider your trip to Iran. Do you think that going to Iran after what President [Mahmoud Ahmadinejad] has said sends the right signal?

SG: Yes, you are right that Congressman Lantos is a good friend of mine. Obviously, no-one in the international community defended what the Iranian President said, and the Security Council itself issued a statement. Obviously, we need to engage people and governments, and of course my itinerary is being refined, and I will announce it later.

Annan cancels controversial trip to Iran Fri. 4 Nov 2005

Iran Focus

Tehran, Iran, Nov. 04 – United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has cancelled his planned trip to Iran which was scheduled to take place next week, a state-owned Iranian news agency announced on Friday.

The report quoted an unnamed official in Iran’s Foreign Ministry as saying that Tehran had officially asked Annan to postpone his trip.

It said that Tehran had made the request to decrease international pressure on the UN chief regarding his agenda for the Middle East.

In New York, a spokesman for Kofi Annan confirmed the report.

"The secretary general and the Iranian government have mutually agreed that this is not an appropriate time for him to travel to Iran", said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

"In light of the ongoing controversy, it would have been difficult to advance the agenda that he had wanted to discuss with the Iranian leadership".

Annan had been under pressure from Western governments, political figures, non-governmental organisations, and Iranian exiles to cancel his trip to Tehran on the grounds that it would give legitimacy to the theocratic regime in the wake of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s call to “wipe Israel off the map”.

Annan leaves this weekend for a tour that would have taken him to Iran from November 11 to November 13.

He will now go to Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Pakistan. Annan is travelling through Paris, where he is scheduled to meet with President Jacques Chirac on Monday, the spokesman said in a statement.

A week ago, Annan expressed dismay about remarks made by Iran's hard-line president.

The Iranian opposition National Council of Resistance of Iran had called on the UN chief to put off his trip and instead take the initiative for the adoption of a decisive policy against Tehran.

Iran’s Islamic ideology to reach four corners of the globe - military Fri. 4 Nov 2005

Iran Focus

Tehran, Iran, Nov. 04 – An Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) commander proclaimed on Friday that Iran’s Islamic ideology would soon reach the “four corners of the earth”.

Brigadier General Javad Karimi who commands the IRGC in the north-eastern city of Mashad told the state-owned Mehr news agency that the country’s Bassij force were willing to sacrifice their lives for the protection of the Islamic Republic. The Bassij, para-military Islamists loyal to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, are an offshoot of the IRGC.

“Today, against the wishes and the rhythm of the imperialist governments and the World Arrogance (United States), the traditional and pure culture of Islam are spreading across the whole world”, Karimi said.

The Bassij were ready to be martyred and sacrifice themselves for the goals of the Islamic Republic, he emphasised, adding that very soon, “the voice of Islam will be heard at the four corners of the globe”.

-----------------

Comment:

Lesson #1 in geography...the world is a sphere, roundness is an absence of corners.....looks as if there's going to be a lot of lost bassij looking for jihad in places that don't exist....

Lesson #1 war....never reveal your plans in advance....arrogence of this kind gurantees defeat.

Lesson #2 war.....there's two things one should never attempt in modern war....never try to invade Russia, and never, ever pull a sneak attack on the USA. Attempting either one would end in certain defeat.

Wishing-well Politics Prove that the Leader of Iran is Mad

November 06, 2005
Irish Independent
Mark Dooley

There are two views currently circulating about Iran's new president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The first is that by calling for Israel's liquidation and by defying the international community on the nuclear issue, he is simply reaching out to his anti-American support-base. The second is that he is mad. Let me tell you why I think the second view is correct.

A number of weeks ago, Ahmadinejad instructed his cabinet to write a letter to a ninth-century Shia imam, Mahdi. Shiites hold that Mahdi will return at the end of days to establish Islam as a global religion. Currently, they believe he is hiding at the bottom of a well in the Iranian city ofIsfahan.

After signing the letter, Ahmadinejad's cabinet wondered how they might deliver the letter to the imam Mahdi. The president ordered his minister for culture to hand-deliver the letter by dropping it into the well. Once it was delivered, Ahmadinejad announced that Mahdi sanctioned his presidential power.

So here we have the leader of an oil-rich theocracy with nuclear ambitions sending letters to a 9th-Century imam in a well. Beneath the comedy, however, there is a terrible truth. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad believes that he has been divinely ordained to bring about the final drama in the struggle for the world's soul. And it is that demented belief in his global significance that makes the new president so dangerous.

That danger was in evidence again last Wednesday, when he stated that he had no intention of ceasing to process uranium at the Isfahan nuclear plant. And just so we got the message, he deployed another batch of uranium ore to the installation.

That was followed by the sacking of over half of Iran's international ambassadors, including its envoy to Britain. These reformers are to be replaced by Ahmadinejad's young hardliners.

And in a major act of political manoeuvring that sent shivers down the spines of Iran's democrats, the president appointed a former colleague in the revolutionary guards to the sensitive position of minister for oil. The appointment caused dismay because the new minister has no experience of government and is just as zealous as his president.

So what is to be done? Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is not simply a threat to Israel and the US. His presidency is an affront to all civilised nations, which is why the time for trying to reason with the man is over. But does that mean military action?

There are plenty who support military intervention in Iran. They include the grandson of Ayatollah Khomeini, the architect of Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution. Hussein Khomeini believes his grandfather created "the world's worst dictatorship", and that the only way to end it "is to bring in the American 82nd Airborne Division".

The military option must always be on the table when dealing with a rogue state intent on destabilising an entire region. But, at this stage, it would do little to help the Iranian pro-democracy movement. And that is because they know that an armed intervention would galvanise support for Ahmadinejad.

Iran is not like Iraq. The reason Iraqis could not remove Saddam by themselves is because the opposition was either in exile or in mass graves. But in Iran there is a young, sophisticated, pro-democracy movement that has millions of members. Andunlike their ill-fated Iraqi brethren, they have established a strong base throughout the country.

That means that Iran has even greater potential to become a beacon for democracy inside the Middle East than Iraq. So how can we help the Iranian democrats remove their despised regime without playing directly into Ahmadinejad's hands?

First, pressure should be applied at the United Nations for a package of economic sanctions to be imposed. The mullahs dread such a blockade because they know it would alienate the poor and uneducated who are their natural supporters.

And if that package includes sanctions on Iran's massive oil wealth, it could crush their nuclear hopes.

Second, the international community must provide all the technical and logistical assistance that the democrats require to start an uprising. For some years now, everything has been in place inside Iran for such an insurrection. The leaders of the pro-western movement are just waiting for the signal from Washington and London.

Finally, it is imperative that the International Atomic Energy Agency be given full access to Iran's nuclear sites before Israel opts to bomb them. If anything will destroy the hopes of an entire generation of Iranians for freedom, it will be a pre-emptive strike by Israel. And that is because it will give Ahmadinejad the excuse he needs to trigger a war involving the entireMiddle East.

The election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as president of Iran has brought us to a point of no return in respect of his beautiful country. For 26 years we have watched as the ayatollahs robbed their citizens of basic rights and liberties. But now the children of the revolution have come of age and want to reclaim their nation from madmen.

Backing them in whatever we can, and however they desire, is not only wise politics. It is also a moral obligation.

Iranian student apologizes to Israel

Young Iranian woman studying in Budapest sends apology letter to Israeli embassy following Iranian president's call to wipe Israel off map
Itamar Eichner

It seems that not all Iranians are against Israel. Workers at the Israeli embassy in Budapest, Hungary, were surprised to receive an apology letter from a female Iranian student, referring to the remark of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that "Israel should be wiped off the map," Israel's leading newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported.

"I feel so ashamed and I am sure that many Iranians share my feelings," the Iranian wrote in a letter sent by e-mail to the embassy, under the title "We are very very sorry."

The 29-year-old Iranian woman, who is currently studying in a Budapest university, wrote to the embassy that the reason she was sending the e-mail were the words of the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding Israel.
She added that she was ashamed of the incident, as were many other Iranians.
The student ended her letter with the hope that one day Israelis and Iranians could live together in peace again.

Yahel Vilan, deputy to the Israeli ambassador to Hungary, immediately thanked the student for her moving words.

Hundreds Protest Iranian Leader's Remarks

By Associated Press

November 7, 2005, 3:29 AM EST

LOS ANGELES -- As many as 1,800 demonstrators rallied outside a federal building to protest a statement by Iran's president that Israel should be "wiped off the map," police said.

There were no reports of arrests at the rally Sunday, said police Lt. Roger Deranian.

The protest was organized by Standwithus.org, which describes itself as "a pro-Israel advocacy organization." A message left with the group's director was not immediately returned.

In October, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called for Israel's destruction while speaking to an international congress to express solidarity with the people of Palestine.

He has since defended the remarks, which drew international criticism and prompted U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan to cancel a trip to Iran.

I guess you didn't bother to look at the national wire services Liberty, otherwise you wouldn't have asked such a silly question.

Since the organizer was "out of pocket" and didn't respond, that's why the report is so short and lacks photos.

Try the LA Times. I'm sure they must have something.
