Breaking News: Destruction of Pasargadae’s Staircases

Destruction of one of Pasargadae’s Staircases

Part of Pasargadae’s staircase has been destructed by illegal diggers who hoped to find a treasure promised in a manuscript found earlier.

Tehran, 17 December 2005 (CHN) -- Illegal diggers have devastated some parts of the staircase of the “Holly Area” of Pasargadae in order to find a treasure promised in a manuscript found earlier.

Pasargadae is one of the most important historical sites of the country located in Fars province. This marvelous monument has been constructed by the order of Cyrus the Great, the founder of Achaemenid dynasty, and has been registered in UNESCO’s List of World Heritage Sites. Some parts of the staircase of the Achaemenid’s “Holly Area”, which is located outside the historical site of Pasargadae, have been devastated by the illegal diggers.

“Six months ago, one third of the staircase of the “Holly Area”, which is located outside the preserved area of Pasargadae, was destructed by the illegal diggers. The evidence indicates that they were most probably looking for some treasure mentioned in an old manuscript,” said Babak Kial, head of Pasargadae Research Center.

According to Kial, although the case was reported to the police department of Fars province for preserving the historical sites immediately, and the director of the Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization of Fars province asked for immediate measures to be taken in order to follow the case, nothing has been reported in this respect yet.

Staircases of the “Holly Area” of the historical site of Pasargadae lead to some raised platforms which seem to be a place of worship. This is the reason the area is being regarded as a holly area. The history of this area goes back to the Achaemenid time.

This “Holly Area” is not located in the vicinity of Pasargadae Complex; thus there are no security systems in the area to protect it from illegal diggers and smugglers.

This historical site is as important as the Persepolis and Pasargadae; and the destruction of the staircase can be compared to the loss of one of the pillars of Persepolis.

“The case went under investigation as soon as it was reported to the police department of the province,” said Mehdi Saffari, deputy director of the Cultural Heritage Police Department of Fars province.

He also explained that it is the first time such a depredation has taken place in the historical site of Pasargadae; and the police department is doing its best to arrest the smugglers.

The historical site of “Holly Area” is now being protected by the police department to prevent such depredations in the future.

Pasargadae guard detail increased

TEHRAN, Dec. 19 (MNA) -- The recent destruction of several Achaemenid era stairs outside the Pasargadae historical site has compelled the Fars Cultural Heritage and Tourism Department to increase the number of guards at the site.

The stairs, which lead to several platforms that apparently were used for prayer and religious rituals, are part of the Pasargadae site but have not been protected as part of the historical site, the director of the Pasargadae Historical Complex said.
Babak Kiyal added that the incident happened six months ago, and the evidence shows that the smugglers were probably looking for an inscription bearing a treasure map.
Fars Cultural Heritage and Tourism Department official Mehdi Safari said that the site is currently being protected by 22 guards around the clock.
“The site is as ancient and invaluable as the tomb of Cyrus in Pasargadae or the Persepolis Palace, and the destruction of the stairs is equivalent to the demolition of a column in Persepolis,” he added.
He noted that no such incidents have been reported at the site before and said that police are investigating the case.
The director of the Parseh and Pasargadae Research Foundation, Mohammad-Hassan Talebian, explained that there are many ancient historical works around and outside the Pasargadae protected site, and over 500 guards are required to protect the region. The only solution is to make the people aware; otherwise, there is no other way to protect the site, he added.
Pasargadae was the first dynastic capital of the Achaemenid Empire, founded by Cyrus the Great, in Pars, homeland of the Persians, in the 6th century BC. Its palaces, gardens, and the mausoleum of Cyrus are outstanding examples of the first phase of royal Achaemenid art and architecture and exceptional testimonies of Persian civilization.
