Post-Treatment PSA Increase Levels Off With Daily Pomegranate Juice
By Daniel J. DeNoon
WebMD Medical NewsReviewed by Louise Chang, MDJuly 5, 2006 -- A glass of pomegranate juice a day may keep prostate cancerprostate cancer recurrence away, UCLA researchers report.

Treatment cures two out of three men with early prostate cancercancer. But after treatment, a third of men have rising levels of prostate-specific antigen -- PSA -- in their blood. Of these men, 34% of them progressed to deadly, metastatic prostate cancer within 15 years. The faster PSA levels double, the sooner a man is likely to see his prostate cancer return.

Cancer-fighting chemicals are found in many foods. One food rich in these kinds of chemicals is pomegranate juice. Might pomegranate juice slow -- or even reverse -- this post-treatment increase in PSA? Yes, find UCLA researcher Allan Pantuck, MD, and colleagues.

Pantuck's team enrolled 46 men in a study funded by the owners of POM Wonderful Co., the maker of the pomegranate juice used in the study. The men all had detectable PSA after cancer treatment; all drank 8 ounces of pomegranate juice every day.

The men's overall PSA doubling time was nearly four times slower after they began drinking pomegranate juice. Sixteen of the 46 patients had a decrease in PSA levels -- and in four, PSA levels dropped by half.

"I was surprised when I saw such an improvement in PSA numbers," Pantuck said, in a news release. "This is not a cure, but we may be able to change the way prostate cancer grows."

Pantuck says that pomegranate juice may allow 65- to 70-year-old men treated for prostate cancer to outlive their risk of dying from their cancer.

Prostate cancer patients with rising PSA levels usually opt for treatment with drugs that block testosterone. This "chemical castration" can have serious side effects, including bone loss, depressiondepression, and sexual dysfunction. It's possible that drinking pomegranate juice can delay the need for such treatments.

Pantuck says that some men in the study have been drinking pomegranate juice -- and keeping their PSA levels stable -- for more than three years.

"The juice seems to be working," he notes.

Because of these promising results, pomegranate juice will be studied in a major, placebo-controlled clinical trial at 10 U.S. medical centers.

The study findings appear in the July 1 issue of Clinical Cancer Research.

Pomegranate Extract Slows Prostate Cancer

Well, you won’t catch me tossing out my green tea anytime soon (I can barely live without it!) but according to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, pomegranate juice may be the health drink of the future. That’s because new lab and animal tests have shown that pomegranate extract can slow the growth of prostate cancer, and may also be effective for cancer prevention. Apparently, pomegranate juice is higher in polyphenols, and hence antioxidants, than both red wine and green tea. According to Reuters:

When they incubated prostate cancer cells with 10 to 100 micrograms/mL of pomegranate extract, they observed a dose-dependent inhibition of cell growth due to apoptosis and necrosis, along with down-modulation of regulatory molecules and cell-cycle arrest.

…When human prostate cancer cells were injected subcutaneously into athymic nude mice, feeding the animals pomegranate extract delayed the appearance of tumors. Tumor growth was significantly inhibited and survival was prolonged. The authors also observed that PSA secretion correlated with tumor growth inhibition.

In terms of recommending pomegranate juice to patients with prostate cancer, Dr. Mukhtar told Reuters Health, “Based on the data we have it’s highly unlikely that it will produce any adverse effects and it is highly possible that it will produce useful effects.”
The article goes on to point out that because pomegranate extract also inhibits skin cancer growth, it is possible it could be effective in a number of other types of cancer as well. In fact, I did some digging around over at PubMed and found some fairly fascinating studies on pomegranate and cancer. Here are a few you might find interesting:

According to this abstract, whole pomegranate juice was more effective than individual pomegranate polyphenols at inhibiting cancer growth in vitro (Stephanie will love this one.)
This abstract highlights the breast cancer preventive potential of both a purified compound from pomegranate, and pomegranate seed oil.
And finally, this abstract suggests that pomegranate fruit extract is effective at inhibiting the skin tumor-promoting effects of the carcinogen TPA in mice.

[edit] Foliage and fruit

Illustration by Otto Wilhelm Thomé, 1885.The leaves are opposite or sub-opposite, glossy, narrow oblong, entire, 3–7 cm long and 2 cm broad. The flowers are bright red, 3 cm in diameter, with five petals (often more on cultivated plants). The fruit is between an orange and a grapefruit in size, 7–12 cm in diameter with a rounded hexagonal shape, and has thick reddish skin and around 600 seeds. [1] The edible parts are the seeds and the red seed pulp surrounding them. There are some cultivars which have been introduced that have a range of pulp colours like purple.

The only other species in the genus Punica, Socotra Pomegranate (Punica protopunica), is endemic to the island of Socotra. It differs in having pink (not red) flowers and smaller, less sweet fruit. Pomegranates are drought tolerant, and can be grown in dry areas with either a Mediterranean winter rainfall climate or in summer rainfall climates. In wetter areas, they are prone to root decay from fungal diseases. They are tolerant of moderate frost, down to about −10°C.

The name "pomegranate" derives from Latin pomum ("apple") and granatus ("seeded"). This has influenced the common name for pomegranate in many languages (e.g. German Granatapfel, seeded apple). The genus name Punica is named for the Phoenicians, who were active in broadening its cultivation, partly for religious reasons; consequently in classical Latin the fruit's name was malum punicum or malum granatum, where "malum" was broadly applied to many apple-like fruits. A separate, widespread root for "pomegranate" is the Egyptian and Semitic rmn. Attested in Ancient Egyptian, in Hebrew rimmôn, and in Arabic rummân, this root was brought by Arabic to a number of languages, including Portuguese (romã)[2], and Kabyle rrumman and Maltese "rumen".

According to the OED, the weapon grenade derived its name, attested in 1532, from the French name for the fruit, which is la grenade (from which also comes the name applied to a kind of syrup, originally pomegranate syrup, widely used in cocktails and grenadine).

Even though this fruit does not originate from China, one common nickname is "Chinese apple"

[edit] Cultivation and uses

Pomegranate leaves
Pomegranate treeThe pomegranate originated from Persia (Iran) and has been cultivated in Central Asia, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and the Mediterranean region for several millennia.[3]

In Georgia, and Armenia to the east of the Black Sea, there are wild pomegranate groves outside of ancient abandoned settlements. The cultivation of the pomegranate has a long history in Armenia; decayed remains of pomegranates dating back to 1000 BC have been found in the country.[4]

Carbonized pips and pieces of the peel of the fruit has been identified in Early Bronze Age levels of Jericho, as well as Late Bronze Age levels of Hala Sultan Tekke on Cyprus and Tiryns. A large, dry pomegranate was found in the tomb of Djehuty, the butler of Queen Hatshepsut; Mesopotamian cuneiform records mention pomegranates from the mid-Third millennium BC onwards.[5] It is also extensively grown in South China and in Southeast Asia, whether originally spread along the route of the Silk Road or brought by sea traders.

The ancient city of Granada in Spain was renamed after the fruit during the Moorish period. Spanish colonists later introduced the fruit to the Caribbean and Latin America, but in the English colonies it was less at home: "Don't use the pomegranate inhospitably, a stranger that has come so far to pay his respects to thee" the English Quaker Peter Collinson wrote to the botanizing John Bartram in Philadelphia, 1762. "Plant it against the side of thy house, nail it close to the wall. In this manner it thrives wonderfully with us, and flowers beautifully, and bears fruit this hot year. I have twenty-four on one tree... Doctor Fothergill says, of all trees this is most salutiferous to mankind."[6] The pomegranate had been introduced as an exotic to England the previous century, by John Tradescant the elder, but the disappointment that it did not set fruit there led to its repeated introduction to the American colonies, even New England. It succeeded in the South: Bartram received a barrel of pomegranates and oranges from a correspondent in Charleston, South Carolina, 1764. Thomas Jefferson planted pomegranates at Monticello in 1771: he had them from George Wythe of Williamsburg.[7]

[edit] Culinary use

Pomegranate fruit, opened
Pomegranate seedsAfter opening the pomegranate by scoring it with a knife and breaking it open, the arils (seed casings) are separated from the skin (peel) and internal white supporting structures (pith and carpellary membrane). Separating the red arils can be simplified by performing this task in a bowl of water, whereby the arils will sink and the white structures will float to the top. The entire seed is consumed raw, though the fleshy outer portion of the seed is the part that is desired. The taste differs depending on the variety of pomegranate and its state of ripeness. It can be very sweet or it can be very sour or tangy, but most fruits lie somewhere in between, which is the characteristic taste, laced with notes of its tannin.

Pomegranate juice is a popular drink in the Middle East, and is also used in Iranian and Indian cuisine; it began to be widely marketed in the US in 2004[citation needed]. Pomegranate concentrate is used in Syrian cuisine. Grenadine syrup is thickened and sweetened pomegranate juice; it is used in cocktail mixing. Before the tomato arrived in the Middle East, grenadine was widely used in many Persian foods; it can still be found in traditional recipes.

Wild pomegranate seeds are sometimes used as a spice, known as anardana (which literally means pomegranate (anar) seeds (dana) in Persian), most notably in Indian and Pakistani cuisine but also as a replacement for pomegranate syrup in Persian and Middle Eastern cuisine. As a result of this, the dried whole seeds can often be obtained in ethnic markets. The seeds are separated from the flesh, dried for 10–15 days and used as an acidic agent for chutney and curry production. The seeds may also be ground in order to avoid seeds becoming stuck in the teeth when eating dishes prepared with them. The seeds of the wild pomegranate daru from the Himalayas is considered the highest quality source for this spice.

In Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan, pomegranate (Turkish: nar; Azerbaijani: nar; Armenian: nur) is used in a variety of ways, notably as pomegranate juice. In Turkey pomegranate sauce, (Turkish: nar ekşisi) is used as a salad dressing, to marinate meat, or simply to drink straight. Pomegranate seeds are also used in salads, in Muhammara (Turkish Walnut Garlic Spread) and in Güllaç, a famous Turkish dessert. In Azerbaijan and Armenia, pomegranate is also used to make high-quality wine which is successfully exported to other countries.

In Greece, pomegranate (Greek: ροδι, rodi) is used in many recipes; such as kollivozoumi, a creamy broth made from boiled wheat, pomegranates and raisins; legume salad with wheat and pomegranate; traditional Middle Eastern lamb kabobs with pomegranate glaze; pomegranate eggplant relish; avocado and pomegranate dip; are just some of the dishes it is used in culinary. Pomegranate is also made into a liqueur and popular fruit confectionery that can be used as ice cream topping, or mixed with yogurt, and even spread as jams over toast for breakfast.

[edit] Health benefits
One pomegranate delivers 40% of an adult's daily vitamin C requirement. It is also a rich source of folic acid and of antioxidants. Pomegranates are high in polyphenols. The most abundant polyphenols in pomegranate are hydrolysable tannins, particularly punicalagins, which have been shown in many peer-reviewed research publications to be the antioxidant responsible for the free-radical scavenging ability of pomegranate juice.

Many food and dietary supplement makers have found the advantages of using pomegranate extracts (which have no sugar, calories, or additives), instead of the juice, as healthy ingredients in their products. Many pomegranate extracts are essentially ellagic acid, which is largely a by-product of the juice extraction process. Ellagic acid has only been shown in published studies to absorb into the body when consumed as ellagitannins such as punicalagins.[8]

In several human clinical trials, the juice of the pomegranate has been found effective in reducing several heart risk factors, including LDL oxidation, macrophage oxidative status, and foam cell formation, all of which are steps in atherosclerosis and heart disease. Tannins have been identified as the primary components responsible for the reduction of oxidative states which lead to these risk factors.[2] Pomegranate has been shown to reduce systolic blood pressure by inhibiting serum angiotension converting enzyme (ACE).[9]

Research suggests that pomegranate juice may be effective against prostate cancer[10][11] and osteoarthritis.[12]

The juice can also be used as an antiseptic when applied to cuts[citation needed].

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin - Madison recently discovered the potential benefits of pomegranate juice in stopping the growth of lung cancer.[13]

[edit] Pomegranates and symbolism
Exodus chapter 28:33–34 directed that images of pomegranates be woven onto the borders of Hebrew priestly robes. 1 Kings chapter 7:13–22 describes pomegranates depicted in the temple King Solomon built in Jerusalem. Jewish tradition teaches that the pomegranate is a symbol for righteousness, because it is said to have 613 seeds which corresponds with the 613 mitzvot or commandments of the Torah. For this reason and others many Jews eat pomegranates on Rosh Hashanah.
For the same reason (Exodus 28:33–34 {{{3}}}), pomegranates are a motif found in Christian religious decoration, they are often woven into the fabric on vestments and liturgical hangings, and wrought in metalwork.
The wild pomegranate did not grow natively in the Aegean area in Neolithic times. It originated in the Iranian east and came to the Aegean world along the same cultural pathways that brought the goddess whom the Anatolians worshipped as Cybele and the Mesopotamias as Ishtar.
The myth of Persephone, the dark goddess of the Underworld, also prominently features the pomegranate. In one version of Greek mythology, Persephone was kidnapped by Hades and taken off to live in the underworld as his wife. Her mother, Demeter (goddess of the Harvest), went into mourning for her lost daughter and thus all green things ceased to grow. Zeus, the highest ranking of the Greek gods, could not leave the Earth to die, so he commanded Hades to return Persephone. It was the rule of the Fates that anyone who consumed food or drink in the Underworld was doomed to spend eternity there. Persephone had no food, but Hades tricked her into eating four pomegranate seeds while she was still his prisoner and so, because of this, she was condemned to spend four months in the Underworld every year. During these four months, when Persephone is sitting on the throne of the Underworld next to her husband Hades, her mother Demeter mourns and no longer gives fertility to the earth. This became an ancient Greek explanation for the seasons.
It should be noted that the number of seeds that Persephone ate is varied, depending on which version of the story is told. The number of seeds she is said to have eaten ranges from three to seven, which accounts for just one barren season if it is just three or four seeds, or two barren seasons (half the year) if she ate six or seven seeds. There is no set number.
The pomegranate also evoked the presence of the Aegean Triple Goddess who evolved into the Olympian Hera, who is sometimes represented offering the pomegranate, as in the Polykleitos' cult image of the Argive Heraion (see below). According to Carl A. P. Ruck and Danny Staples, the chambered pomegranate is also a surrogate for the poppy's narcotic capsule, with its comparable shape and chambered interior.[14] On a Mycenaean seal illustrated in Joseph Campbell's Occidental Mythology 1964, figure 19, the seated Goddess of the double-headed axe (the labrys) offers three poppy pods in her right hand and supports her breast with her left. She embodies both aspects of the dual goddess, life-giving and death-dealing at once. The Titan Orion was represented as "marrying" Side, a name that in Boeotia means "pomegranate", thus consecrating the primal hunter to the Goddess. Other Greek dialects call the pomegranate rhoa; its possible connection with the name of the earth goddess Rhea, inexplicable in Greek, proved suggestive for the mythographer Karl Kerenyi, who suggested that the consonance might ultimately derive from a deeper, pre-Indo-European language layer.

Pomegranate — opened upIn the sixth century BCE, Polykleitos took ivory and gold to sculpt the seated Argive Hera in her temple. She held a scepter in one hand and offered a pomegranate, like a royal orb, in the other. "About the pomegranate I must say nothing," whispered the traveller Pausanias in the second century AD, "for its story is something of a mystery." Indeed, in the Orion story we hear that Hera cast pomegranate-Side into dim Erebus — "for daring to rival Hera's beauty", which forms the probable point of connection with the older Osiris/Isis story. Since the ancient Egyptians identified the Orion constellation in the sky as Sah the "soul of Osiris", the identification of this section of the myth seems relatively complete. Hera wears, not a wreath nor a tiara nor a diadem, but clearly the calyx of the pomegranate that has become her serrated crown.[15] In some artistic depictions, the pomegranate is found in the hand of Mary, mother of Jesus.
In modern times the pomegranate still holds strong symbolic meanings for the Greeks. On important days in the Greek Orthodox calendar, such as the Presentation of the Virgin Mary and on Christmas Day, it is traditional to have at the dinner table "polysporia", also known by their ancient name "panspermia" in some regions of Greece. In ancient times they were offered to Demeter[citation needed] and to the other gods for fertile land, for the spirits of the dead and in honor of compassionate Dionysus. In modern times the symbolic meaning is assumed by Jesus and his mother Mary. Pomegranates are also prominent at Greek weddings and funerals. When Greeks commemorate their dead, they make "kollyva" as offerings that consist of boiled wheat, mixed with sugar and decorated with pomegranate. It is also traditional in Greece to break a pomegranate on the ground at weddings, on New Years and when one buys a new home for a house guest to bring as a first gift a pomegranate which is placed under/near the ikonostasi, (home altar), of the house, as it is a symbol of abundance, fertility and good luck. Pomegranate decorations for the home are very common in Greece and sold in most homegoods stores. [3]

[edit] Other

Tree of the white pomegranate.Pomegranate is one of the symbols of Armenia, representing fertility, abundance and marriage.
It is the official logo of many cities in Turkey.
The Immortals, an elite infantry unit in ancient Persia had spears with pomegranate-shaped counterweights at the butt made of gold (for officers) and silver (for regular infantry). In modern Iran the fruit is still believed to give long and healthy life.
The Qur'an mentions pomegranates three times (6:99, 6:141, 55:068) — twice as examples of the good things God creates, once as a fruit found in the Garden of Paradise.
Pomegranate juice stains clothing permanently unless it is washed out immediately with water — only bleach can remove stains.
Pomegranate juice is used for natural dyeing of non-synthetic fabrics.
Pomegranate juice is sold in the USA under several labels, and is available in health food stores and supermarkets across the country.
Pomegranate juice will turn blue when subjected to basic (ie alkaline) conditions (similar to litmus paper).
Although not native to China, Korea or Japan, the pomegranate is widely grown there and many cultivars have been developed. It is widely used for bonsai, because of its flowers and for the unusual twisted bark that older specimens can attain.
The pomegranate also gave its name to the hand grenade from its shape and size (and the resemblance of a pomegranate's seeds to a grenade's fragments), and to the garnet from its colour. In many languages (including Belarusian, Spanish, French, Polish, and Hebrew) the words are exactly the same.
Balaustines are the red rose-like flowers of the pomegranate, which are very bitter to the taste. In medicine, its dried form has been used as an astringent.[16] (The term "balaustine" (Latin: balaustinus) is also used for a pomegranate-red colour.[17])
The pomegranate was the personal emblem of the Holy Roman Emperor, Maximilian I.
With the rise in popularity of the pomegranate in American markets, Starbucks introduced a pomegranate frappuccino in the summer of 2006.
In the Northern hemisphere, the fruit is typically in season from September to January. In the Southern hemisphere, it is in season from March to May.
The pomegranate is a divine symbol in Pinto Ricardo's series, The Stone Dance of the Chameleon.
The pomegranate is one of the symbols of Hera.
The pomegranate is also called the Food of the Dead.
In Orthodox Christian memorial services pomegranate seeds will often be put in the koliva which is blessed after the service and eaten by all of the mourners.

The summer season means berries are everywhere! Aside from their delicious taste, find out what they are doing to protect your health.

Berry Health Blast
Naturally sweet and intoxicatingly delicious, berries also pack a punch with a myriad of health benefits. The enticing red, purple, and blue skins of berries contain bioflavonoids such as anthocyanins.

These compounds are beneficial because they are antioxidants, which reduce free radical damage. The antioxidant content of berries is more potent than vitamins C and E. The anthocyanin in berries also helps to reduce inflammation - more effectively even than aspirin!

The blueberry wins extra points for being the berry with one of the highest level of antioxidants. Blueberries have neuroprotective properties that shield brain cells from damage caused by trauma, chemicals, and plaque; in other words, blueberries help slow down the age-related onset of memory loss, Alzheimer's, and senility.

In fact, research has found that rats bred to develop Alzheimer's do not develop the symptoms of the disease if blueberries are incorporated into their diet.

Cherries also contain these beneficial anthocyanin compounds, which stimulate your pancreas to produce insulin; for hundreds of years Chinese researchers have observed that cherries help keep diabetics healthy.

These compounds also protect you against cancer, arthritis, and heart disease because they lower cholesterol. So I recommend that you eat lots of cherries and other dark-colored fruits to maintain balanced blood sugar and enjoy a healthy long life!

Go for Goji Berries, "the Superfruit"
While we are on the subject of berries, let's talk about a well-known member of the traditional Chinese herbalist's arsenal of herbs for thousands of years: goji berries. Also known as lycium berry and wolfberry, this fruit native to China has long been known for its tonic effects, especially on vision, hormonal system and the brain.

Goji berry contains polysaccharides, which stimulate the immune system and signal the pituitary to secrete human growth hormone. Goji also has the highest concentration of carotenoids, especially beta-carotene, of any plant in the world, making it a powerful antioxidant.

The berry is traditionally used together with other Chinese tonic herbs to increase sexual potency and fertility. Rich in linoleic acid (precursor to GLA), riboflavin, selenium, calcium, vitamins B and C, zinc, and other trace minerals, these berries are safe to use and have been used for thousands of years in Asia.

Give Goji berries a try:

Look for these berries in your local health food store. They can be found as dried berries or juice.
Boil tea from goji berries and chrysanthemum flowers. The tea will be refreshing and you will see better in your vision.
Try using goji berries instead of raisins in cereals and trail mix.
I hope you bask in berries all summer! I invite you to visit often and share your own personal health and longevity tips with me.

May you live long, live strong, and live happy!

Ocean Robbins Quick OVerview Saturday April 28, 2012 Event The Science Of Healthy Eating wrote:

Today's information and links are below, but first, let's celebrate what has already happened!

Our theme for launch day was The Science of Healthy Eating, as we absorbed the knowledge, inspiration and practical tools offered by Drs. Ornish, Esselstyn and Fuhrman. Some participants listened to the first broadcasts via teleconference, others over the Internet, and others got MP3 downloads with the Empowerment Package. Responses have been overwhelmingly positive. I'll share a few of my highlights from the speakers and what people said about them:

Dr. Dean Ornish started things off, telling us many people have the belief that there's a false choice between what's good for us and what's fun for us. But it's not true. Better diet can lead to better sex and more energy and a happier life. In his words:

"I can't tell you how many patients who have told me that if they knew they wouldn't live a day longer, they are still grateful for the changes they have made because their life is more fulfilling. It's a very simple idea, but a very radical idea, that when you eat better, love more, exercise more, and don't smoke, you'll be happier. When people realize that you just feel so much better, that's what makes it worth doing."

During Dr. Ornish's interview, Zsolt Zsofka wrote: "Listening to the summit now. Quality content! Intelligent, timely, well worth my time! Thank you!"

Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn told us that among certain cultures that eat plant-based diets, heart disease is virtually non-existent. If you live there, he commented, you'll have a more lucrative career selling pencils than being a cardiologist. During World War 2, Germany deprived the countries it occupied of livestock. From 1939 to 1945 in Norway, deaths from heart attacks and strokes plummeted. But as soon as there was a cessation of hostilities - back came the meat, back came the dairy, and back came the heart attacks and the strokes.

Finally, we had an interview with Dr. Joel Fuhrman - the man who coined the term "Nutritarian", which means someone whose food choices provide an optimal amount of nutrients per calorie. Dr. Fuhrman offered the specific nutritional recommendations that he has come to after decades of study and practice. "The American diet", he commented, "could not be more effective in generating heart disease if we designed it for that purpose..."

Amechina Anyanwu wrote: "I was very excited to attend the free, online Food Revolution Summit. I was ready with pen and paper and an open mind to learning new information. I felt Drs. Ornish, Esselstyn and Fuhrman presented essential and balanced information that demonstrated their personal and professional integrity, and commitment to humanity. Their ability to present the core "truths" about food, health and nutrition in a clear, concise and practical manner was aided by the excellent interview technique of John Robbins. I came away from each session armed with new information and empowered to exercise greater control of my health. This is the education most of us have never received but from which we can all benefit. I look forward with enthusiasm to the upcoming speakers.""

If you were able to join in this first set of broadcasts: what did you think? You can share thoughts or reactions, and see what other people are saying, on the Summit's Facebook page. I also invite you to join my dad (@johnrobbinsnow) and I (@oceanrobbins) on Twitter during today's broadcast using the hash tag #foodrevolution.

Today's Theme is GMOs: How Dangerous Are They?

Today, the Food Revolution Summit shifts its focus to Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO's). Did you know that more than 70% of the foods in American restaurants and supermarkets contain genetically modified ingredients?

Is there a link between the spread of GMOs and the recent dramatic increase in food allergies?

Genetically modified foods have been linked to toxic and allergic reactions in people; to sickness, sterility and fatalities in livestock; and damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals. Should you be alarmed?

Why is Monsanto spending millions trying to stop GMO's from being labeled, even though 90% of the American public supports labeling? Why is an upcoming California ballot initiative one of the most important fronts in the GMO struggle? And how can you get involved?

Join Jeffrey Smith, founder of the Institute for Responsible Technology; Dr. Joseph Mercola, founder of the world's #1 natural health website Mercola.com; and Dr. Vandana Shiva, founder of Navdanya Institute, who is helping to organize 500,000 farmers in India for cultural and ecological survival.

You'll get answers to vital questions, and find out how you can protect your family, and how you can make a difference on this crucial issue.

For the schedule (which is posted in Eastern Daylight Time), and links to listen to each of these interviews online, visit the Summit calendar page. We found that some people struggled with the internet portal yesterday, so if that happens to you and you have the ability to dial-in via teleconference, you may want to consider doing so. The pin code for all the calls is 326519# and you can click here for a directory of local access numbers.

Yours for safe food and healthy food systems for everyone,

PS - You can listen to these extraordinary interviews for free when they broadcast twice per day. The instructions and schedule are here. Or order the Empowerment Package to listen to all the Summit interviews, and have the transcripts to read, whenever you like.

http://foodrevolution.org/cmd.php?af=1453203

I want to tell you about the amazing lineup coming up next. But first, what did we find out in day two?

Jeffrey SmithJeffrey Smith, founder of the Institute for Responsible Technology, rocked the opening with some alarming information about Genetically Modified Organisms, or GMOs. Jeffrey told us that shortly after GM soy was introduced in the UK, food allergies shot up by 50%.

Jeffrey said that GMOs are leading to a massive increase in human exposure both to the Roundup herbicide, and to the bt toxin that has been genetically engineered into every cell of corn and other plants.

Ninety-three percent of Americans want labeling of GMO foods, and Jeffrey reported that 53% of Americans say they wouldn’t eat GMOs if they were labeled.

Response to Jeffrey’s interview quickly lit up the Summit Facebook page, and letters of appreciation (and outrage at what he is exposing) have been pouring in ever since.

Dr. MercolaDr. Joseph Mercola, founder of the internet’s most popular natural health website, spoke next. He reflected that Monsanto, which makes most of the world's GMO seeds, has been very effective. They have essentially planted former employees in just about every major US federal agency that is responsible for making GMO decisions on a federal basis. They have corrupted the system, so the only way to fight back is on the state ballot initiative level.

“Even if we all become aware of the dangers of genetically engineered foods, we can’t do anything about it if we don’t know which foods are genetically engineered”, commented Dr. Mercola, so “we need to require labeling. That’s why Monsanto is spending $100 million fighting a California ballot initiative that would require labeling. Because they know this could bring down their whole scheme.”

Dr. ShivaOur final speaker of the day was Dr. Vandana Shiva, on the line from India. She spoke of the tragic irony that in the land where Gandhi spun freedom through cotton and the spinning wheel, 95% of the cotton is now controlled by Monsanto.

More than 250,000 farmers in India have committed suicide since Monsanto began to take control of the cotton industry.

“Patents on seed mean genocide, and patents on seed mean ecocide,” she told us. “I’m working with 500,000 farmers, mobilizing millions, creating 66 seed banks, training farmers every month, to be fighting for food sovereignty. This isn’t what I wanted for my life, but too much is at stake. Everything’s at stake.”

Yesterday’s speakers were issuing a call to action.

It’s time to label GMO’s, and to expose them for what they are. Long touted as an answer to poverty and hunger, they are turning out to be an attempted consolidation of power and money by big agrichemical companies – with profound and disturbing implications for our soil, our health, and our farmers.

Although disturbing, the message was also empowering. Jeffrey Smith commented that he felt we are reaching a tipping point on this issue. The days of unlabelled GMOs running rampant through our food supply may be numbered.

If you have been among the many thousands who have joined in the first days of broadcasts: what did you think? You can share thoughts or reactions, and see what other people are saying, on the Summit’s Facebook page. Or Tweet us your thoughts, ideas and questions to @johnrobbinsnow and @oceanrobbins using hashtag #foodrevolution.

Some of the responses we received yesterday were heartwarming.

Udit Shah, writing from India, commented: “What you have done deserves infinite amount of gratitude from millions of people around the world… And, you are doing this COMPLETELY FREE. Hardly anyone does such a great job for free. Especially, these days... Salute to all the 23 speakers. May God bless all of you and this world!”

And Now… What’s Coming Next? Get Ready!
Our first speaker today, Morgan Spurlock, ate nothing but McDonald’s meals for 30 days. He filmed the whole experience, and a team of doctors watched what happened. He turned his story into the award-winning feature documentary Super Size Me.

Find out what Morgan learned. It just might change your relationship to fast food… forever.

Next we’ll hear from Rory Freedman, co-author of the 3 million copy global bestseller Skinny *****: A no-nonsense, tough love guide for savvy girls who want to stop eating crap and start looking fabulous. Find out Rory’s keys not only for looking great, but also for reaching new audiences with messages of health and wellness.

If you want to be an ally to people you love, instead of a self-righteous nag, Morgan and Rory have crucial lessons to share.

Finally, we’ll get a special repeat airing of the interview with Jeffrey Smith. We’re offering it again at 10 am Pacific Daylight Time / 1 pm Eastern Daylight Time.

See the calendar for the whole lineup.

Starting today, by popular demand, the first broadcast of every interview will be available on the internet afterwards for 24 hours of replays. And if your internet connect is via satellite or dial-up, we recommend using the teleconference option.

It’s going to be another exciting day in the food revolution. And another step towards health and freedom for all of us.

Ocean Robbins Quick Overview Event Monday, April 30, How To Win Friends And Influence People Without Being A Nag? wrote:

http://foodrevolution.org/cmd.php?af=1453203

The Food Revolution Summit continues to inspire and mobilize tens of thousands of people. And what a day we have before us!

But first, let’s take a look at some of the highlights from yesterday’s presentations.

Morgan Spurlock, the documentary filmmaker whose smashingly successful film Super Size Me captured him eating nothing but McDonald’s meals for 30 days and risking his own life in the process, told us a little more about his experience making the film:

“I was shocked by the speed with which my body deteriorated. I was lethargic, and I felt terrible.”

When Super Size Me came out, Morgan said, McDonald’s offered to give apples to audiences as they exited the movie theaters. Theater owners told McDonald’s what they could do with those apples. Then as concern about obesity was growing worldwide, McDonald’s held a press conference to publicize their concern about the issue. They announced they were launching an exercise video in which Ronald McDonald encouraged kids to exercise. Of course, the menu at McDonald’s went unchanged.

Bonnie Lane commented: “GREAT discussion by Morgan Spurlock! Your work is wonderful and has helped me share such important information with my teenage son in a way that he understand, enjoys and is motivated by! Thank you for the great interview this morning!!”

Rory FreedmanNext, #1 bestselling author Rory Freedman delivered a call to action to stop eating crap so we can start looking fabulous. In her charming and straight from the heart style, she challenged listeners to take steps, of any size, in a positive direction.

“We all need to love our bodies and embrace our size and shape just as it is,” Rory said. “And that’s no reason not to do everything we can to be as healthy and vibrant as possible. You don’t have to go all the way to a perfect diet now. You can start where you are, and keep moving in a good direction.”

What really keeps her going, Rory told us, is her love for animals. She says that they are so beautiful, and our species is treating them with so much disdain. For her, seeing how animals are really being treated by humans is a game-changer.

Afterwards, Annie Morrissey wrote: “Ocean, today I was in tears again, laughing with Morgan, crying with Rory... just fantastic interviews, and most influential. Congratulations for attracting what can only be described as a virtual stadium-full of people committed to saving themselves and our planet.”

What did you think? You can share thoughts or reactions, and see what other people are saying, on the Summit’s Facebook page. Or Tweet us your thoughts, ideas and questions to @johnrobbinsnow and @oceanrobbins using hashtag #foodrevolution.

Today’s Focus is on Eating As If The Earth Mattered (Which It Most Certainly Does!)

SunsetIt turns out that what we eat doesn’t affect just our own health. It affects our whole world. But here’s the other part of it: our whole world affects us, too!

So today’s conversation isn’t just for “environmentalists”. It’s for everyone who wants to be healthy and to live on a healthy planet.

We’ll start off by hearing from Bill McKibben on the food-climate connection. Bill is the founder of 350.org, which has become the biggest grassroots climate campaign on the planet. He has been described by the Boston Globe as “probably the most important environmentalist” in the United States.

Bill will share his take on the urgency of our climate situation, and the tremendous point of leverage that our food choices provide. Get the full scoop (sorry, but coming from what was once an ice cream family, I tend to over-use that word!) and find out what it means to your life.

Then we’ll look at organic foods. In recent years, the market for organics has exploded. Are they an over-priced scam, or fundamental to your health and the health of our world? And what is the difference between “organic” and “natural”?

For this conversation, we’ll interview Ronnie Cummins, the founder and director of the Organic Consumers Association, a non-profit network of 850,000 consumers dedicated to protecting organic standards and promoting healthy, just, and sustainable agriculture.

Finally, we’ll turn our attention to Frances Moore Lappé, who is author of eighteen books, including the three-million-copy culture-changer, Diet for a Small Planet. Frances is the cofounder of the Small Planet Institute, and for more than 40 years she has been studying the interface between the personal and the global. She delivers a rousing call to action and an inspiring voice of insight.

As you will see, Bill McKibben, Ronnie Cummins, and Frances Moore Lappe’ are all extraordinary. This is a day not to be missed!

See the calendar for the whole lineup.

It’s going to be another insight-filled and galvanizing day in the food revolution. And another step towards health and freedom for all of us.

Today’s Food Revolution Summit interviews focused on Eating As If The Earth Mattered (Which It Most Certainly Does!). All three speakers delivered extraordinary, knock-your-socks-off insights and compelling calls to action. I was exhilarated and inspired, and judging by the comments that have been coming in, so were many of the other Summit participants!

What did you think? If you heard today’s interviews already, the Summit’s Facebook page is a great place to post comments or questions.

All three of these interviews are still available for free via teleconference and 24 hour web replay – check out the Summit calendar for the details.

Bill McKibbenBill McKibben, author of numerous bestsellers including Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet, and founder of 350.org, which is now the world’s largest grassroots climate campaign, offered some zingers.

“There are times when I wonder if that big brain of ours was really a good idea in terms of adaptive potential. Maybe it depends if it’s connected to a big enough heart.”

“We’re beginning to get across the notion that the radicals in this situation aren’t us. What I want is a word a little like the one I was born into. That’s a pretty conservative notion. The radicals are the oil companies who want to alter the composition of the atmosphere.”

Asked about the UN Food and Agriculture Organization report that says 18% -- or more -- of the entire world’s greenhouse gas emissions stems from livestock production, Bill answered: “Yes. It is clearly a big problem. Iit comes from cutting down forests in order to get more pasture land. It comes from the emissions of animals themselves, belching methane… and on and on and on.”

“For 20 years in the US, we’ve had a perfect bipartisan record of accomplishing nothing on climate change…. It’s pretty clear that left to its own devices, the system won’t produce change, so we can’t leave it to its own devices.”

Ronnie CumminsRonnie Cummins, founder of the 800,000-member Organic Consumers Association, and quite possibly the leading advocate for organic foods on the planet, spoke next. Some of the highlights I took from his commentary included:

“Many consumers purchase ‘natural’ products and think they are like organic but just cheaper. But natural means very little in the marketplace. Most so-called ‘natural’ foods are not only grown or produced using pesticides, but also contain genetically engineered ingredients.”

“The USDA is supposed to represent all of the people of the United States, and it has a $100 billion budget. That is our money that they are using. But almost nothing in that budget is geared towards organics, sustainable farming, or traditional farming. We need to stop subsidizing unsustainable industrialized agriculture.”

“Is organic agriculture capable of providing the bountiful harvests that we need? In the developing world, where a majority of the world’s people live, organic farms are 2-5 times more productive than chemical-intensive agriculture, and in the industrialized world we can produce about the same yield per acre, without all the chemicals.”

Frances Moore-Lappe'Frances Moore Lappe’, who helped to bring the connection between diet and our planet into global consciousness with the 3-million copy bestseller Diet for a Small Planet, was our final speaker of the morning. She delivered non-stop moving commentary:

“Washington now has roughly two-dozen lobbyists for every person that Americans elect to represent us there.”

“We don’t have a shortage of food, we have a shortage of justice. As we shift to focus on our relationships with each other, and with the earth, as we align our lives and our economy with what is true about our nature and is harmonious with the wellbeing of nature, we find answers to so many of the questions we face today.”

“I am neither an optimist not a pessimist. I am a possiblist. I believe in working for what is possible.”

“Hope is not what we find in evidence, it’s what we become in action.”

"We need to seek out others who are in action, already engaged, and believe that we will become more like them as we work shoulder to shoulder. If we want to become more courageous, we have to hang out with courage."

Moving Forward

All three of these amazing interviews are still available on replay for another 15+ hours. To find out how to hear them, and all the other speakers still to come in our program, visit the Food Revolution Summit calendar page.

To get downloadable MP3 recordings and transcripts of the interviews with all of today’s speakers, and all 20 others in this Summit, plus an extraordinary collection of bonus gifts, check out the Empowerment Package, which is still available for 50% off until the end of the Summit.
