Here are some considerations on how Iran could become a Western-style democracy
First of all,for "Western-style" democracy we mean all the principles which are the base of a full and working democracy and rule of law.
Obviously, the history and the daily reality shows us that the only working democracies are those which inspire themselves to the values taught by he Libertarian Conservative intellectuals, thinkers and great men of the history: Abraham Lincoln,Thomas Jefferson,George Washington,Lord Acton,Adam Smith,Alexis de Tocqueville,John Locke,Kark Popper,Carl Menger,Friederik von Hayek, etc..
a just society is based on these key elements:
the rule of law.
the equality of all the human beings in front of the Law.
freedom of speech,religion,political opinion,association..
freedom to change a religion or do not follow any religion.
freedom to change politica party or association
freedom to chose one's own favourite job and change it when he wants to do so.
freedom to travel outside and going back to his origin country.
the right to own properties( for this the private property is a human right and must be granted and protected)

in a Repubblican system, the people should have the right to elect directly the Prime Minister and the President of the Repubblic,as well as the parliamentarians and Senators, as in the US.
in a Democratic and Secular Monarchy, the King should have limited powers and be only a symbolic figure which grant law and order and grant that the Constitution is not violated..

It would be good a federal system, but this depends on the structure of a country..
but the role of the State must be well defined:in the Libertarian vision, the State must intervene only in some cases:when the individual rights are violated by something or someone;when the people is unable to reach its objectives, his happiness;when the Constitution is violated or when inside outside threats are a danger for the nation.
The State have the control on the National Army and the Police.
Whether a Monarchy, then the Armed Forces are under the control of the King.
Whether a Repubblic, they must be under the control of the President of the Republic.
Anyway, the concept of "minimum state" is a part of the human right..
Other those things, the State must not intervene in the private life of the citizens..
Other key elements of a truly democratic and libertarian state are :
A Free Enterprise:everyone is free to create an enterprise, developing his creative ideas to provide jobs for the people and realize his happiness.
The right of every human being to purse his happiness in every legal way possible.
The full equality of rights between men and women.Neither the man must have more rights than the woman, nor the woman must have more rights than a man.
This means enable all the citizens to reach their ambitions,cultural,political,religious,social,etc..regardless the sex,the colour of skin, the ethnic group, political affiliation, social status,etc..
it is important that the needed citizen, which however desires to realize his ambitions, desires and creativity, be helped in this by the civil society, the non-profit organizations, the responsible citizens and finally the State,if it is necessary..
Every human being must enjoy his legittimate rights. For this,a homosexual or a lesbian must be helped to face discrimination from the society,be active part of the life of society.it is important that the homosexual or lesbian couples are recognized by the State,so that they can get married in the way they desire and get the social and medical assistance.
A woman must be free to chose if pratice the abortion in safe conditons, and abortion must be recognized by the State as a legittimate right and an individual liberty which cannot be violated.
At the same time,a doctor must be free to decide if help the woman to pratice abortion or not, according to what his coscience says to do.Force a man to do something against his will is makes a man a "prisoner of coscience".
The so-called "light drugs" should be legalized but at the same time it is necessary a strong anti-drug prevention campaign to convince the youth that ALL the drugs are a danger for their health and a disaster for their future.
However, prohibitionism causes criminality and does not help to fight the use of drugs.
Freedom of scientific research is also very important.
For a system to be really secular and libertarian , every one must be left free ti follow his own religion or change it.
But it is important that the others' liberty is not violated and a religion does not become a threat for the society.
at this point, the Religion must be totally Separated by the State and politics and the private life of everyone.
It is prefereble not to establish any "State religion"..
Religion is a private chosen of a citizen.
But extremism must be prevented and /or fought.
The education must be free and there must be both public and private schools and they must have the same equal rights.a family must be free to chose where send its children to study , whethere in a public or a private school.if a family cannot afford to pay a private school, bt at the same time wants its child to study there, the State should finance the private schools..
a Free School and a Free Education for everyone, regardless of his/her own income or social-status.

These are the main points of a truly Secular, Democratic and Libertarian state..
Liberty must be granted always and everwhere, unless it violates the others' rights and security, or threats the society..
It is clear which in a free country,Liberty must be accompained by social responsibility and has some limits which i described above.
Liberty cannot be sold out.
One's liberty ends when the other's liberty ends.
One's dignity ends when the other's dignity ends.. Wink

well said... so it is important that other nations actively support the Iranian people and others throughout the world who wish to live in the sort of environment which you describe... The vision is the easy part and I very much agree with you.. Question is - every scenario being different, Iraq differen than Iranian scenario.. How do we get from point A which is the vision to point F which is actually having a free and democratic IRan? That is the tough part..

good points!! Smile best to you!
