"Do You Hear The People Sing" from "Les Miserables"
June 20, 1789 - The representatives of the French people, excluded by the King's forces, take an oath of mutual loyalty on a tennis court. (I'll bet there are some tennis courts in Iran. I know there are plenty of excluded representatives, too!)
Declaration of the Rights of Man, adopted August 26, 1789. Text is at http://www.historyguide.org/intellect/declaration.html. (Perhaps Iran should have one of these as well!)
A most rousing song from the stage adaption of the novel about the French Revolution by Victor Hugo. Listen to a sample here: http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=200486137&loc=18250&sp=1
I wonder if this song translated into Persian (with appropriate changes*, i.e. 'crusade' or 'crusader' is one of favorite eptihets of Bin Ladin) might not be a good background for a video? I wonder also, if the people of France, hearing Iranian demonstrators singing to this music, will reflect on the position their government has taken regarding this conflict?
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!
Will you join in our crusade*?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free!!
(Chorus)
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!
Will you give all you can give
So that our banner may advance
Some will fall and some will live
Will you stand up and take your chance?
The blood of the martyrs
Will water the Land of Iran!*
(Chorus)
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!
Here are the lyrics from the finale, to the same music:
Do you hear the people sing
Lost in the valley of the night?
It is the music of a people
Who are climbing to the light.
For the wretched of the earth
There is a flame that never dies.
Even the darkest night will end
And the sun will rise.
They will live again in freedom
In the garden of the Lord.
They will walk behind the plough-share,
They will put away the sword.
The chain will be broken
And all men will have their reward.
Will you join in our crusade*?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Do you hear the people sing?
Say, do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that they bring
When tomorrow comes!
Will you join in our crusade*?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Do you hear the people sing?
Say, do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that they bring
When tomorrow comes...
Tomorrow comes! |
