Those Algerian so called 'political prisoners' are violent hardened Islamist thugs who have killed over hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in Algeria.

Ditto for some of those other demonstrators, you gotta be careful, some of these people want an Islamist regime, not freedom! And if their secular authoritarian governments fall apart, then they will have a brutal totalitarian Islamist state that is a million times worst just like Iran. The Islamists aren't dumb, they're already looking for their next home!

The Islamists have been and are fishing in muddy waters of the Middle Eastern 'democracy' wave, and many of these countries will endup with nightmarish Islamist regimes!

Big Pharoah's blog makes the same cautionary note, that forcing Egypt into totally free elections immediately might leave the Muslim Brotherhood as the group best poised to gain power in such an election, and end the possibility of any further free elections. But creating a climate of free discussion immediately will help to grow moderate democratic forces and allow them to organize for elections down the road.

Dear Steffie,

I like Nour, and I'm glad he's out of prison. In the long run democracy in the Middle East is best for the region and the world as well, but in the very short term, rushing a formerly closed society into totally open elections without time for moderate democratic forces to develop and organize, might give an advantage to extremist forces with extensive underground organizations, as nearly happened in France and Italy right after World War 2 (there, the Communists). If for instance, totally open elections were suddenly called for Egypt and Morocco this year, who knows which forces might benefit from pent-up anti-regime sentiment? That might be a case of one man, one vote, but only *once*. Who can say what might have happened in Turkey a few years ago without a stoutly secular military ready to intervene?

The move toward the Middle East spring is going to inevitably have some rain showers, and perhaps more than one storm, but hopefully not Noah's Flood.
