Iran freedom and support act set for vote in House

Washington, D.C., April 14, 2005- H.R. 282 passed with overwhelming support yesterday during a twenty minute mark-up session of the House Committee on International Relations Subcommittee on the Middle East and Central Asia.

H.R. 282 calls for making regime change in Iran official US policy, a position the United States government has avoided during the last 26 years of the two countries’ shaky relations. While supporters argue that any step short of regime change is unlikely to bring about change in Iran, opponents argue that making regime change official policy eliminates the possibility of diplomacy and makes confrontation between the US and Iran inevitable.

The Iraq Democracy Act, which made regime change in Iraq official US policy, was passed by Congress in 1998.

The Bill has bipartisan support in Congress with eighty-five republicans and fifty-two democrats co-sponsors, as of April 13. Absent from the list of cosponsors are two influential House republicans, Rep. Henry Hyde (R-Il), chairman of the International Relations Committee and Tom Delay (R-Fl), House majority leader.

For a more detailed description, read NIAC’s analysis of H.R. 282

NIAC will continue to monitor this legislation and will inform the community of any developments regarding the Act.

H.R. 282 is expected to be voted on within the next few weeks.

Due to the importance of this Bill to the Iranian-American community, NIAC urges all individuals to take action by contacting their lawmakers through letters and phone calls.

Take action today!
