Protesting Student Takeover Tabriz's Sahand University

•Protesting students in Tabriz's Sahand University took control of the campus, member of the university's Islamic student council Behruz Safari tells Radio Farda. The takeover followed three days of sit-in protest against remarks by the university's president which students found offensive. Sahand's president Cheraqlou had created a fearful police atmosphere in the university, and summoned the students who dared to express their opinions to the disciplinary committee, he says, adding that students have asked the university president to resign. Tabriz University Students Block Faculty and Staff's Entrance

•On their fourth day of protest against the Tabriz University president, the Islamic student council members blocked access to the campus to the university's faculty and staff. “We cannot guarantee that our sit-in, which is against the university administration, would not get out of control and become political,” a spokesman for the striking Islamic student council tells Radio Farda. The striking students demand the removal of the university's head, who, according to the students, has “insulted” the university's electrical engineering students, he adds. Six students, who were on hunger strike were taken to hospital after they fell ill, he adds. (Nima Tamadon)
